5 iron DTL...comments?

The wraparound finish is a sign that your are still flipping. Pros that use that finish(i.e. Wie) get there because they have TONS of rotation and flexibility. You are getting there because your followthrough plane is too steep.

ball position is very far forward, making you open your shoulders at address, causing you to swing to the right. looks like that one was pulled, and the strong grip explains why you dont cut/slice it. five iron should be around 2 inches forward of the centre of your stance. use this as a reference for rest of your clubs. also tostop this, try tilting away from the target, it will feel like you're going to the left, but will actually be square

Background:

-Reforming flipper
-20 handicap
-Been reading this forum for about 2 years
-Using a Strong Grip and hopefully angled hinging
-In this video clip I am using a 5 iron although the contact was good, I hooked it just a touch.

All comments welcome :)

If you could- I'd be curious how far is it to the "end of the range"? Where is that "inside" range located? How do you like it? Negative and Positive?
Thanks

I agree with pecky, ball position and address shoulder alignment need a bit of refinement. Downswing appears to start with a tugging of the lead shoulder keeping the plane a little steep and the left elbow trailing too much. Keep your lead shoulder passive for a second while your tailbone starts the downswing allowing your plane to shallow a bit and get your left forearm more forward.

thx for the feedback guys...

Pecky...I've tried to keep my ball position the same for all my clubs. If I'm too far forward then I'll have to re-adjust. I agree with the open shoulders comment too...in fact, I have been have way worse in the past and I have actually improved. However, I am confused by your comment "causing you to swing to the right"...it looks like my swing is too far left...or that my "followthrough plane is too steep" like thefuture37 says. Does that make sense? or Am I misinterpreting?

Mike O - that range is indoors. It's located in Winnipeg MB...I would say that it's probably about 110 to 120 yards out. It's hitting off of mats which sux and considering its -15 Celsius it's the only game in town.

Doubled - I have been trying to think of leading my downswing with a bit of a hip bump first. At least thats what I was trying to do in this range session. But I agree...that plane is definitely way steeeeeep. It's the first time I have seen my swing on video.

Thx for the replies everyone! Very much appreciated...ohhh...and keep em coming!

i say 'swinging to the right' because your a left hander. trying so you could understand lol to try and be generic, your downswing is too steep, meaning you swing outside-in and the one was pulled

Hope you don't mind if I make a rather different comment? It looks like you've got a lot of good feedback on the swing (I agree about the setup issues), and you are clearly improving.

I'd just say this: make sure you work on your short game and play a lot, including in competitions. I mention this because you say you are a 20 handicap. I play frequently with a lot of 10 handicaps who don't have as functional a swing as yours. I'm not saying you shouldn't keep working on swing fundamentals, but you already have enough of swing to get yourself down in the low 80s. And I think it will be easier to keep making your swing better when you start to play better. I just don't see any reason why you should be above 90 with your current swing.

Good luck!

Thank you Fro...

Your advice is right on. My short game stinks and I could save a ton of strokes with some more time/practice put in. The problem is what and how to practice the short game. IT would be nice to have Brian's upcoming short game video already in hand so I could practice proven techniques.

lol...Thx d...the short game is perrty ugly! Playing once a week on average with a 6 month season really doesn't help. I am a CDN with dual citizenship and I often wonder I don't make a move south so I can play this game year round!

Wow I didn't realize your handicap was 20. I would say don't even consider yourself as having a handicap if you don't play enough to have a decent short game. Your swing from the back view is in the ballpark of a high single digit handicap, a nice poor man's Freddie Couples thing you've got going on there. A facing view needs to be seen to be sure though.

For your short game I will just tell you this. Hit a little bit down on all short game shots with your hans slightly ahead of the ball. Except for the flop, which is rarely used. Many people try to scoop chips and pitches and mishit everything. With putting if you practice just getting distance control down you will be at least decent.

Even with my "work in progress swing" I feel I should be scoring better and the short game is the culprit. However, because of this site I have managed to correct a series of horrible swing flaws that I had before I discovered Manzella and friends! Alignment issues aside, I had a huge cupped right wrist on my back swing (that went waaaay past parallel with all clubs) that left the club so wide open I had no choice but to flip that sucker just to square it up...hopefully...sometimes. :)

Right towards the end of the year I was having more success with the short game by keeping my strong grip with "the ant" looking at the ball. It freed me up to make consistent ball contact with hands forward so I could finally focus on "feeling" the distance and trajectory instead of worrying about contact.

thx for the feedback.
