A bit more 'post' NSA troubleshooting...(sorry, long post)

Hey folks,

Just a recap before I explain what I'm working with so it makes a bit more sense.

I was hugely impressed with NSA, and noticed instantaneous results. However, shortly after I started doing weird things with my swing by -over- emphasizing the twist. I started concentrating so much on twisting to the ball, I was starting to spray shots, and I found I was coming over the top again. I was focusing so much on twisting my forearms, I started 'learning' a poor shoulder move that put me outside in on the ball.

I backed up. I no longer think about the twist specifically on irons, and I exercise conscious twist on woods, driver. I have found a happy medium after several games/range sessions.

Here's where it gets tricky. I figured out how to reliably come inside on the ball, and stop my shoulder rotation from killing my ball striking ability. I used any resource I could think of to get an inside move back in my routine. My personal solution turned out to be simple:

1. I remind myself that the 2P swing is motivated by the arms, and not the shoulders. (I coil my upper body a lot, and let my arms swing past my body with the club a few times to get that exaggerated feeling of _separation_ between shoulders and arms)

2. I remind myself that I must close the face at impact (especially with driver) because of step #3.

3. I remind myself that I must strike the ball from the inside out (especially with woods/driver) because of step #2.

<< Steps 2 and 3 are heavily linked to my success because if I close the face aggressively and come over the top a bit, it results in a massive hook. Conversely, if I do NOT close the face aggressively but I hit from the inside, it results in a massive push to right field>>

4. I remind myself that to give my self the best chance of success I need to keep my right shoulder driving down in the swing (not around) and my HEAD can move, but remain behind the ball as long as humanly possible.

So that's it. It's actually quite a simple process, but it really does work for me. Iron divots straighten out perfectly, and drives hit the sweet spot and carry further than ever as a result. There are things that I definitely notice that I call "indicators" that I pulled this off correctly... as an example my hands finish higher, or my hips are way past my upper body because my head stayed back, or my right shoulder is under my chin at/after impact, etc, etc. So in other words I've done this enough successfully to know some indicators of 'success'.

The 'but' I mentioned earlier seems to creep in *especially* after I successfully start coming inside and making some great drives...

It drives me nuts because I can't reliably fix it, but it appears after a few drives, I will hit my irons really fat, taking divots starting before the ball (uhg!) and therefore the distance is shot. Oddly enough, when I check the divots in this case, they are always longer than normal, deeper than normal BUT still very straight to target.

It's odd because the more successful I become at hitting inside on driver, the more pronounced this iron problem becomes! It's almost like I need to turn something down. As a result I often shorten my iron backswing, and try to rein back or 'quiet' my body down.

It's a shame solving one problem often leads to another like this. Any suggestions? Again, I am sorry for the length of the post. I just thought a complete background may help with a solution.

sounds like your getting underplane with irons. i assume your hitting a draw now. you can sorta get away with being below plane with the driver but if you get underplane with irons your likely to catch it heavy.

try to feel your torso faces the target more thru impact

Thank you pecky, I never even considered that possibility simply because I've been fighting the opposite for a while.

Yup, your right shoulder is going down too early...you can get away with it on teed up shots but not with irons..try and find a happy medium of around/down (with the right shoulder)....might help if you think of your hands finishing more "left" at the 3/4 position on the follow through (while the right arm is still straight)...

Yea I think that's it.... I guess I'm an example of over doing it. Never thought I'd have that trouble.

As you say, I'm trying to find a happy middle ground. You're right though, when it's teed up, you feel like you can get away with it and just lower your shoulder and slam it like a baseball swing hitting a ground ball. Do that with irons and I end up with a divot you could bury a cow in.
