A Few Observations II

First observation is the climbing of the Manzella Mountain of Knowledge. I saw this place up in the clouds and after a few months here and a few videos, I thought I knew what was what with the golf swing. But after reaching this place, the clouds cleared and I realized I was standing in what’s basically base camp. Looks like I need a few more Sherpa than I originally thought. It truly is remarkable how much knowledge is here and how much “been there, done that” with the appropriate remedy options.

As for the swing, I’m addressing two main issues at the moment – flipping and a reverse pivot. For the flipping issue, I’m doing half pitches. After a bout of elbow pain, I firmed up the arms a bit and that seemed to help. Still somewhat inconsistent with my urge to quit rotating at the bottom and hit but it’s coming along.

Regarding the reverse pivot, as usual there’s a ton in the archives here. I’m guessing what is causing it is too many BizHub phrases like “look at the wonderful restricted hip turn relative to the shoulders…” stuff. So I was setting up with a square right foot, turning my shoulders 90+ degrees and tried to restrict my hip turn. Since my middle age body can’t really do that, my hips pretty much rebelled and slid to the right. My fix is to open the right foot about 10 degrees, turn the right hip straight back and allow the left heel to come up a touch. To start the downswing, I just replant the left heel while keeping everything else turned. That really seems to accomplish a lot of good things such as the slide the hips to the left, assist in shifting some weight left and create some axis tilt. From that position, I just pivot. Does all this sound right? Still doing all this in the back yard so no ball flight evidence yet but it sure feels better (and different).

Doing the above, I’m fighting being too flat at the top. My left arm was below my shoulders at the top so I really have to make an effort to swing my arms more up than around. It that the best way to address this?

This site really is great.

Your "To start the downswing..." sounds really good to me.

Brian has said before that the first thing to move in the ds is the left foot.

(or at least there is pressure applied on the left foot)

With your pivot you need to make sure you setup with your spine tilted away fr target. Esp. with longer clubs and higher shots.

Think power hitter in baseball. (some more than others no doubt) Pujols maybe.

To make sure the clubface isn't a problem do Nsa's clubface stuff. Start w neutral grip. Twistaway, wedding ring up.

(together, as in Nsa...or even experiment with them individually and see how you do)

(go for high draws or even hooks)

Regarding the reverse pivot, as usual there’s a ton in the archives here. I’m guessing what is causing it is....again, this could be a poor grip and you are trying to square the club. The throwaway (casting) pitches your body away from the target. If your hands "let" you store and retain some angle between the shaft and left arm, the throwout motion; down out and forward will pull your body to a reasonable position on your target foot.

It that the best way to address this? Typically, I only see super flat arm swings when I see really bent over set ups. Post a swing..

"Wallop with the pivot" and get your impact alignments organized before you settle into your address position. You have some basics that you need to get beyond.

Look up "lagging clubhead pitch shot."
