Explain the 3 imperatives, show them how to achieve them, show them how to practice them.
Tell them have several practice sessions w/o a ball. In fact I would set up a ratio of non ball to ball practice, what would be good, 3:1, 4:1?

Use small, slow chips to show the student that to make the ball go straight, the inside of the ball must be struck.

Yep. Lots of time on the grip and setup and the flying wedges. Tons of short chips to get the feel of good ball striking.

Show them IMPACT and explain its 3 dimensions.

Setup: Flying wedges

3 imperatives

And a couple of good 'drills' to show how it all fits together ;)

but these players are already intimidated by the thought of hitting a ball, do we really want to get them thinking about the three imparitives? I pose this question after watching a guy hit it 50 feet with a middle iron. You would not want to get him doing some full motion drills with little thought?

Hit down and out to first base
Hands ahead
Don't move your head

How is that intimidating?

Chip, pitch, punch

There is absolutely nothing scary about the imperatives, in fact in reality they are quite simple, but the most important.

Get them to hit the same spot on the ground repeatedly. When they become proficient at this, place a golf ball just in front of the point at which they impacted the ground.

Then have them impact the same spot on the ground but this time they will contact the ball first.

Voila!!

a newbie comes to you who has no idea how to swing a club, what do you do?
Swing a rope, tied with a driver head cover to the end, around back and forth.

I'm not an instructor but I wish someone had started me with Brian's "Building Blocks" and made sure I wasn't steering.
If there is a better intro than "Building Blocks" please tell me where I can find it.

You want em to chunk it?

He probably meant to say to put the ball just BEHIND the divot, but this won't work anyway, because they will mentally relocate the low point of the swing to be at the ball.

There just had to be someone "smart" enough out there to misunderstand.
You win the prize.

The object is to drive the clubhead down to low point. Once that concept is grasped then the ball is positioned in front of low point. Clubhead meet ball, clubhead continue down to low point - you following this.................?

bts,

So your going to make a big fat guy with no flexibility a swinger from the first lesson???

Because using a rope, is swinging. Try and push a rope it won't work.

I personally would observe the student's physical stature and maybe do some hand eye coordiantion and flexibility tests. Maybe even have them try to hit a ball. This will have a big impact on how I teach and what I teach to this individual student.

This is what I do.

Remember, I have given over 25,000 lessons and I have been teaching since 1982, so I have TRIED THEM ALL.

Of course if I find a better way, I'll junk it all tomorrow...

But here goes:

I place three balls in a row—90° to the target—and then I hit the middle ball.

I show the golfer that "see I hit the ball and THEN made the divot"?

I then put the next ball in the same spot, set them up very basically, and tell them to try to hit the ball on THE WAY TO CLEANING OUT the divot.

Sometimes they do.

If they miss badly, I remove the ball.

I then incorporate the most BASIC of all golfing principles: AT impact the rear end will be forward of address, do wil the hands, and the HEAD WILL BE BEHIND THE BALL.

Then we get it tto getting the club UP enough to hit DOWN ENOUGH, and dozens of simple concepts...

But that's a another video ;)!

what would you guys think of having them do the drill where they continually swing the golf club for 5 or so swings without them stopping. THen while doing that give them one thought to work on. It seems something like this would get them working on rhythm, balance, not swinging too hard, a decent plane, and the feel for swinging a golf club

Sounds vaguely familiar, Diggerdog, don't it?:D
