A question of width? 6B 1D

I'm curious to hear people's views on width.

If you had to pick one, is maintaining width/extensor action more important on the backswing, or downswing?

Would you ever consider it a 'good thing' to get narrow on the backswing and wider on the through swing? (as opposed to wide to narrow)

Someone once told me...wide/narrow shouldn't be the big deal it's made out to be. Unless the left arm bends, you don't change the radius. You can't get any wider or narrower than your straight left arm allows.

"Real" width is the product of picking the club up on-plane with your right forearm while stretching the left arm through Extensor Action.

As Homer would say, "Kee-rect!" :)

Combine this move with a Stationary Head and either Standard or Single Left Wrist Action (10-18-A/C) to the Top, and you're on your way to a world-class Backstroke.

You are talking about two different things, Ed.

Width of the clubhead (swing).

Extensor Action.

For the purpose of the question - I'm talking about the hands and their travel.

I take it that everyone is in general agreement that the left arm should remain straight via extensor action, and that in an ideal swing the right arm would remain straight on the through swing (from a geometry view).

A "width swing" is simply a swing in which the hands don't go much above the shoulders, whether by choice or physical limitation. One of the downsides to a width swing is that because of a lack of heighth, there is tendency to direct the hands toward the target(steering). The infamous "top 50 teacher" concept of throwing things at the target, rather than the ball.
