My driving and wedge play have sucked lately. Period.
Can't hit a fairway to save my life and duffing every wedge / approach shot I look at.
Played 18 yesterday, and on the ninth tee I had an epiphany. I had been forward pressing my hands then resetting my grip. I normally don't forward press with the driver, but I do it all the time for pitch shots. Holding the club in front of me I saw the club was now about 25 degrees CLOSED . No wonder I have been hitting giant toe in divots!
Remembering that I want a flat left wrist at impact and bent right wrist at impact, I made sure for the rest of the round to set my hands square in front of me with the club face vertical before doing any forward shaft lean at address.
The results were damn near instant. Some of the best driving I have ever done. All the clubs in my bag came alive. Only reason I still shot a lousy 47 on the back was because I kept flying the green or coming up short (club choice and gusty wind)! I had 3 pitch shots that hit the pin itself!
Anyways, just thought I would share this.
Yeah, I know Brian doesn't care for the "Jack Nicklaus hands forward at address" position, but it works magic for me (I have weak arms paired with strong legs) and provides more structure to my swing.
The point is....and boy do I keep learning this the hard way... "ALWAYS CHECK YOUR GRIP!"
BTW... "Follow the yellow brick road" has been fantastic for correcting my severe in-out swing path. Thanks Brian!
