Hi,
I’m new here and very impressed with the information and knowledge being passed around.

I’d like to ask advice on getting a new set of clubs

I play off a 19 handicap but inconsistently is my downfall
Some days I could play off 12 and the next 26
It would not be unusual for me to par the hard no 1 hole and triple bogie the number 18 hole
Sigh
I was invited to an all day long iron day by a PGA pro who I get lessons off from time to time. It was costly but so are his half hour lessons and I decided to go. (I am in Australia)
Seems he’s an agent for Henry G* clubs and of course my clubs were picked to death and I was shown what his clubs could do.

The big thing that I noticed was lie angle, which seems to help explain my lack of accuracy with the shorter irons (pulling and slight hooks).

I have been reading other posts here and I see MOI matched clubs mentioned, sounds good but how do I translate that or know that I will get that from a club builder

Also the Henry G guy offers pured shafts (for $30aud extra per shaft). He had my 7 iron put in vice like contraption pulled it back and it ended up going round in circles while a pure shaft acted like it would stay true to plane

When I get a new set of clubs it is going to be a big investment for me and I want to do it right so I am asking for any constructive advice on what to look for

I’m in my early 50ies, not super fit but on the Henry G day my swing speed was around the 100 to 105 mph mark with a regular shaft 13 degree driver

Things learned from the Henry G day include..

Regular not so stiff shafts are good
Hitting down with a 13degree driver is good

And I have to get a set of clubs with every club having the correct lie angle

Thanks in advance

Terry

It concerns me that you went for an all day lesson and came away with club recommendations.

A lie angle that is off doesn't mean you need new clubs, you can adjust what you have. Also $30 for a pured shaft is a bit rich...what he showed you was a shaft that has been FLO'ed, which should be 5-10 per club.

What are you current equipment specs, do you like the heads you are using...a reshaft and a lie adjustment could be the answer for you that would be a lot cheaper.

I suggest that before anyone buys new clubs, they first read Tom Wishons book, Search for the Perfect Golf Club, or at least his 12 myths brochure. It's a good start in understanding how important it is that your clubs fit your swing.

Getting fitted is a great idea for everybody, and there's a lot of TGM guys that love Henry Griffitts. But if you go to iSeek, the Australian golf forum you'll find a lot of unsatisfied HG customers. I know a couple of teacher/fitters here in Europe that do a great job, and they have very good reputations, with a lot of satisfied customers, in contrast to what I've heard about Australia.

Seems like the OEM's are getting better and better with their fitting systems, and you might have some luck checking them out, or finding a PCS certified club maker in your area. http://www.proclubmakers.org/

A good club maker could even bend the clubs you have now to the proper lie and loft, depending on how far off they are.
