Aiming Point

Basically, it's where you aim your thrust (aim it ahead of the ball).

I assume you haven't seen "Confessions of a Former Flipper."

You should check it out. Great video man. Like $7 for 45 mins. or w/e.

I think aiming point is the most difficult yet the most important part of TGM to integrate into my swing. After spending years aiming at the ball with the clubhead in the minds eye instead of the hands its hard for me to "get it". I struggle with aiming point more than any other part of TGM.

It's easy.

At the Top of your Stroke, imagine there's a dead straight rail track going from your Hands (Pressure Point #3 exactly) through the Ball and into the ground. Your Hands is the Bullet Train and it can't do anything except shoot down that track -- even though your Body is rotating. As you get more experienced, you can shift the track a little in front (for shorter clubs) or a little behind (for longer clubs) the Ball.

Enjoy the ride and have a safe journey! ;)

Thanks for the picture Brian. I have your video but was wondering if you have a "standard" way of using aiming point for each club? Like 1 inch in front of the ball for one club, the ball for another, etc.? Does it also depend on the lie? As you can see, I have NO idea what I'm talking about. Thanks

Hi Curtis...

Not Brian - he must be getting some coffee...

Keep in mind, aiming point for each person may be different and can only be pinpointed with practice!

That being said - generally - 5 iron will, again - generally, be aimed at the ball if the ball is in the middle of the stance. Approximately one inch back for longer clubs, one inch forward for shorter clubs...

But you may be different. Experiment and detail your results....it may help.

And that is a great question by the way - you obviously, contrary to your own belief, know what you're talking about!

No coffee, just a 700 mile drive to Winter Garden, FL.

No standard way of doing anything, some people will hit it WORSE if they even know aiming point exists!

Even Homer had an alternative procedure—get your hands to where they need to be at impact.

"some people will hit it WORSE if they even know aiming point exists!"

- I think that "people" is ME. It's easier for me just to hit it and not think about it.

What are some problems that typically come up if you tell em about Aiming Point Brian?

....moving head forward, etc?

More problems for Swingers, Hitters? or no difference.

What exactly is supposed to happen at the aiming point. I assume the flat left wrist uncocks fully and begins to swivel at that point - is that correct?

Aiming point is meant to bring your hands to their correct Impact position. The Release occurs before Impact. Therefore, in the full swing for Swingers, the release swivel has already occurred and the left wrist has begun to uncock when the hands reach Impact position. The left wrist doesn't uncock to full extension until after impact.

Garth, believe it or not, that's the #1 reason why most people can't hit it or play a LICK.

That's an interesting statement to be sure! I don't want to assume what you mean, but when you say "most" people, do you mean the 90% or so that make up the hacker catagory? I've heard some of the best players talk about "target golf", and not thinking about anything other than the landing area of their shot. I guess if you are talking about the 90% that i mentioned, then i can see what you mean, since they are probably trying to steer the club toward the target and breaking down at impact.
Anyways, sorry to take this off topic, i meant my other post as more of a sarcastic poke, but i found your reply got me thinking...

For me aiming point has worked like magic. I was comming over the top and Brian thought I should read the downswing article which I did but when I focused on dropping the right shoulder I still came over the top. But when I focused on aiming point it fixed my path and I was getting hella compression on that ball.Smiles, smiles and more smiles.

Need some help with this. How important is this and what is it exactly? I'm pretty new so English please.:D
Hi Curtis
Have a look to Brians Fiddle drill (Confessions of a former flipper)
It may helps you to feel the dead straight rail track
Good golf
