If I'm not using aiming point is that hurting my game? I don't take much of a divot, could this be why?? Thanks

Perhaps. But you don't need a big divot to be a good ball striker. Jim Furyk doesn't take a huge divot, but has always been a terrific ball striker.

Aiming is important and helps you get the hands ahead, which facilitates a descending blow.

EVERYONE has an aiming point.

Because everyone consciously or subconsciously DIRECTS the thrust of their hands SOMEWHERE.

You need to onsciously or subconsciously DIRECT YOURS more forward.

Just do the three ball drill and you'll be fine.

Brian - new to the site and not familiar with the three ball drill (search function didnt provide anything specific). Curious as to what this might be - please explain. Thanks in advance.

Numbersguy44- I believe the drill is you line up 3 balls perpendicular to the target line. Hit the middle one, the divot should be on the target side of the two remaining balls. If it's starts before you are not hitting down like you should. Someone help me out if I freaked that up.

Brian - What if I hit balls off my mat I have set up in my garage? Any other drills?

what are drills or suggestions to get the divot ahead of the ball line in that drill? i do have the flipper video and has helped, but other suggestions? thanks

From YOUR VIEW at IMPACT, your hands should be in front of your left shoe.

Good point Brian, I see what you mean.

But I think if you're a really bad player, you might not have an Aiming Point because you don't tryto direct a straight line thrust towards the ball from the top (which essentially is what Aiming Point is), but an indirect circular sweeping thrust instead.

And that's when you need to teach them...

aiming point help

I think using an aiming point might really help me. At the moment i use the wheel rim imaginary when swinging and am not directing my thrust at a specific point.

I'd like to give aiming point a try but but there a few things i don't understand, just wondered if anyone could help.

how do you swing to an aiming point further forward without jeopardising the whole swing down mantra? (i heard forward was basically a by product of swinging downward and outward)

Also how does the aiming point concept work when there is a shift on the downswing say from the turned shoulder plane to elbow plane?

Cheers,

Danny

I used to use a grip that was weaker than Vertical (left wrist)....very weak....with an overroll to the inside (way underplane).....and Angled Hinging.

lol...

I couldn't take a divot if I tried.....and I couldn't hit a lob wedge more than like 50-60 yards (and never left).

Couldn't hit it low if I tried....worked good off mats at the Dome in the winter (kinda like hitting off a flier lie all the time).....very high......didn't work off the real stuff.

I was trying to copy Hogan...(trying)....and overdid it. I didn't miss right ever lol! (obviously) But it was a crappy swing all in all....(I managed pretty good with driver tho).

From my one golf lesson, I was told that at impact , your hands should look to be not only left of your left shoe from one's vantage point, but also at or behind your left heel line. That is the aiming point. That hand location at first appears ridiculously too far forward, but on video, the shaft isn't leaning forward all that much. What I originally thought was a forward leaning shaft at impact fix was in fact vertical or leaning backwards. Or as the instructor told me, not even close to leaning forward.

Try to focus on the front of the golf ball rather than the back if you want to take a divot. Play through the ball and not at it.

Simple as that, really.
