The best thing for someone who has never swung before is the analogy of the clubface being a baseball bat. Opens on the backswing and the closes on the downswing. Most people that are just starting either dont open the clubface at all on the way back, or open it way too much, both of which are helped by this.
Show him a pivot that makes the club go around and forward. Then show him arm and wrist action that makes the club go up and down and then do Brian's 3 ball drill.
