For a swinger, how soon in the downstroke should you begin to feel the left arm roll?

At the last moment man. See Ben Hogan...uncock and roll at the last moment.

Try swinging a heavy club to get the sensation. I think you have to learn to take that same "club swings itself" feel to your regular clubs.
