Hit my fourth 'unofficial' ace of the year today... range, 160 yards into a heavy cross/head wind...3/4 6 choked down..... too bad it counts for nothing, but still always a thrill to see. hit the stick halfway up, dead on drop into the cup.

I had one about a month ago. I was playing alone and on number 2, I hit 6 iron from 185 dead on the pin the whole way. Hit just short of the pin and rolled in. The first ace was "official" but this second wasn't. Still counts though :) !!!

But 4 in one year...damn!!!

a hole in one on a driving range???.......that's almost as bad as a world class instructor demonstrating a drill in his apartment parking lot......

you guys are way too funny....i honestly enjoy reading these posts...they keep me laughing

EdZ,
I didn't catch the driving range part of your post. LOL. I thought you meant you were playing by yourself and had no witnesses. A hole in one on a driving range??? Come one.

Do you mean that you were playing the Par 3 Practice Holes which were part of a nice golf academy?
Or were you actually hitting balls on the range part of the driving range and hitting to flags?

why would that matter? it was at the range, but honestly, what is the difference? ball is hit into the hole = ace, one shot, can't be done any better... do you hit aces at the range often from 160 yards in a stiff wind? :)

Brian.... believe it or not, I too hit the pin nearly every day... day before this ace I hit the pin 4 times in one bucket at 168 yards (no wind that day)... but thanks, I appreciate it. Always fun when you hit the shot you want!

I had one on the course a while back, hit the pin dead on from 190, bounced straight back about 20 yards, and unfortunately, into a water hazard that was near the green... that's golf though eh?

;)

Ed,
I'm sorry, but it isn't a hole in one if it is on the range. You can hit a ball, rake one to you again, hit a ball, rake one to you again, over, and over, and over. During a round, there are usually 4 holes where you can have an ace. 4 chances per round, not 150 chances to the same pin out of one bucket of balls. By your logic, I chip in 50 times a day because I chip in a lot during chipping practice. Big difference between a round of golf and range practice. If we went on range practice skill, I would have won on the PGA Tour already. But, we don't so I haven't.

i can slice on the range with the very first shot. i can go to the course and slice with the very first shot...no raking needed...:(

hole in one = went in the hole in one shot

'official' hole in one = on course with witnesses

Hardly comparable hitting chips in vs. full 160 yard shots, but whatever floats your boat dude.....

Edz,
An unofficial "hole-in-one" means something like: you didn't finish a regulation 18 holes.

Hitting it into the hole from the range means "hitting it into the hole at the range." If somebody calls that a "hole-in-one" it's usually meant as a joke, not an official/unofficial hole-in-one. I don't know if there's anybody in the world who would call that an unofficial hole-in-one.

Now, Mikestloc can't take you seriously, which is unfortunate, because I think you had some valid points.

EdZ,
If I hole out from the fairway for eagle on a par 4, it is just that...a holed out eagle. It went in the hole in one shot, but it wasn't from the tee box. Also, the driving range isn't one shot. It is 150 shots from the bucket. If you holed out on your 50th ball, then it took you 50 shots to make a hole in one. That means 50 par three holes that you would have to play. Almost 13 round of golf. An "unofficial" hole in one according to the USGA is when you don't finish the round you are playing (or 9 holes actually I think) or more loosly, when you don't have a witness to the shot. Your points just aren't valid. A driving range is not a golf course no matter how you look at it. It's just not. On the range you can get into a groove and a tempo that just clicks and you get on a role. The golf course it different. I could go to the range and hit the ball well and the go brag about how I hit 100 greens in a row, but it just isn't true. It is the driving range. It isn't real.

call it whatever you want guys..... I don't care... just happy to hit a great shot that went from tee, to hole, in one swing.... from 160 yards... if you all want to mentally masturbate on the details, be my guest.

I cant say that I have ever been to a range that actually has a hole on the target greens. Most i know of simply have the flag stick stuck deep into the ground.
