Are they hitting it off #18 as low as it looks?

Pretty sure it is way uphill.

Calling Art Maffei and Joe Mayo....

Brian,

There is the equivalent of what seems like a 3-4 story 'hill' right in front of the tee on # 18 at Riviera. Then comes a gradual up-sloping fairway bending to the right with the green 475 yards away, the clubhouse at the apex in the distance, the 'Freddie Couples' eucalyptus trees lining the right side of the fairway, and 'velcro/ kikuyu' grass waiting to arrest any forward motion of the golf ball if you miss the fairway or the green.

The tee shots I watched for the first 3 days sometimes included a low rocket-launch down the left side of this banana shaped hole, but probably from the cameras used, AND the steep rise right in front of the tee, everything seemed low to the TV viewer.

Wish you all could be here, it's our west coast Augusta.

I have heard that 18th is a brute. Enough so that if the course has beaten you that the 18th is there to finish you off.

Walking around Riviera every step on the kikuyu feels like you're pulling your feet out of quicksand. Then you get to 18 and you have to hit your drive over a mountain to get to the fairway. If you thin it, you're not going to make it.

The television cameras make the hole look flat compared to how it is in real life.

My only complaint with Riviera is that they call the 1st hole a par 5. Guys are laying up off the tee and hitting 7 irons into the green. I've played courses where they did this to keep the course par from going below 70. Making this hole a par 4 would make the course par 70. Can a golf course make up their own rules with regards to the par of holes? The PGA Tour has flat 500 yard par 5's, and at this tournament they have a big downhill 500 yard par 5. What's the deal with this?

Let's say, from Rivi' tee at 18, it's 220 to carry the fairway. What's the carry if you were on level lie on Son of OrangeManz?
