Arms and shoulders question

Should the arms and shoulders stop turning at roughly the same time during the backswing? If so, what is the benefit?

mgranato, it can happen that way and work if the other parts match.

IMO, if you "carry" the club to the top, you can finish the arm swing and shoulder turn at the same time, BUT the downswing needs to start with the shoulders then holding back against the hip shift. If you "swing" the arms back, then they will definitely (and should) stop after the shoulders stop; and then, on the downswing, the shoulders and hips can start together with the arms holding back against the chest.

Oh man, this is gold. I've been just thinking about this, but didn't know quite how to put it into words. Virtuoso's answer is exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks, V. The reason I ask is because I saw some video (face on) and it appears my arms continue to swing up after (several frames) my shoulders stop turning. The shoulders start turning straight away and seem to stop when my left arm is around 9:30ish, but the arms don't stop there. I'm guessing this has been in my swing for a while.

There are so many ways to swing the club effectively, but for the sake of sanity, I tend to throw different methods in buckets as long as all the parts match within those methods.

For arms and shoulders finishing the backswing together, the appropriate analogy for me is throwing the medicine ball together with both hands. Examples: Faldo and Price (bump the hips and then stomach and shoulders square the arms up).

For arms swinging past shoulders on the backswing, the analogy seems to be throwing a baseball side-arm. Examples: Trevino and Mahan (hip rotation drags the whole assembly around).

I like the question and V's answer.

I remember instruction in late 90's or early 2000's, where I was told "once the shoulders stop, the arms are done" and I hated it.

Allegedly that was a prescription to stop "over swinging" but I was *NOT* a candidate...so why instruct me regarding that? One size does not fit all...
