Average Drivng distance

Brian:

I am curious about what your average driving distance is. For a well struck straight driver, I can get about 210-215 carry. Michelle Wie can get over 280 I beleive.

Thx

I am similar, if not a little longer on tee shots. The problem is that my driver distance does not match well with my iron distances. I hit my 8-iron in the 150-155 range, but can only muster around 220-230 with my driver on my best-struck shots. I never gave it much thought until today when my father-in-law pointed out that I was 2 to 3 clubs longer than him on iron shots, but was only marginally longer off the tee. To me, this means that I have to be doing something wrong with my driver. I know that I tend to hit it all over the face, which will always cause a big distance loss. But even my center hits are short in comparison to other guys who get similar distances with irons. Any suggestions?

I do not disagree with you there at all either. I know he got those clubs from me, and they were custom fitted for me (at 3/4" over standard). I am 6'3, and he is 5'9. When I gave them to him, I encouraged him to take them to a local club builder and have them adjusted to fit, and he didn't.

So yes, he could be struggling a bit with his irons as well. Still, my driver distances are terrible right now.

Very few tour players use a driver that is longer than 45". If you are hitting it all over the face, your driver may be too long for you. Try gripping down in half inch increments until on center impact is achieved. Use face tape or talcum power on the back of the ball to see exactly where contact is made.
If you decide to cut down your driver, be aware that the shaft will become stiffer and the swing weight will change as well.
Now the tricky part, if when making centered contact and you are still not getting the distance you think you should, your launch angle may be too high or too low as well as your spin rate. The combination of shaft flex and loft may need to be adjusted or go to your local PGA Golf Pro to be fitted for a new driver. Having the proper launch conditions will provide maximum distance. So it may be the arrow, but.......

Is that 245 miles Brian - If so you could join the FGI'ers long drive contest...lol

Brian perhaps you should steal the driver out of the current US masters holders bag and have it ping off 300 yards...lol

In all seriousness though: Im sure as your shoulder gets better you can start to rip it again.... and hope the shoulder is mending well....

Its probably because you can get away with alot of funky stuff with your short irons and still hit them most of the distance as if your technique was alot better but as you increase the clubs - the differences become apparent...

Even with a great deal of clubhead speed and I know myself that if I so choose I can gather a great deal, if its not directed in the right way - your swing isn't going to hit the ball far withe longer clubs.... infact for joe public - The distance vs quality of strike +accuracy attained factor for me seems as though most ppl should drive off with about a six iron...

Just get an FGI special Nemesis driver and you too can appraoch the 350 yard mark. :D But you also have to put in an XXXX flex Accuflex telephone pole too.

Very true. I can't hit my medium and long irons and I can hit my wedges and short irons up to an 8 iron very crisply. But for some odd reason, I can also hit my driver. I try to be a pure swinger. Perhaps for the longer irons, I need a 4 barrel approach. Maybe it is just a matter of ball position. I hope the video addresses this.

I carry 265-275 average, hit my 8 iron 148-154 (but as with all shorter irons, I 'can' hit it a club longer, accuracy is the goal, not distance)

As with all clubs, it is SO important you hit 'solid' shots.... long drives are much less about strength, than solid contact and a smooth balanced motion

You know guys...245 carry, that's CARRY, is not bad at sea-level.

I can hit it further if I swing like I'm in a long-driving contest.

I would take 245 carry in a heart beat. I assume correctly that 245 is controlled.

WOW - 265-275 AVERAGE carry is the same as the average carry AND roll of Hidemichi Tanaka, Brit Open Champ Ben Curtis, Scott Verplank, Nick Price, Fred Funk, and Jerry Kelly among many other card carrying Tour players!!!! And these guys are playing on fairways which stimp about like a pool table.
