Backswing compensations for someone with low range of motion with right wrist

hi all! beautiful forum with alot of great info!

my background info:
because of a bad accident few years back, had to have major reconstructive surgery on my right wrist. after a few years of occupational therapy, i have no major problems with the right wrist anymore but i have lost a major amount of range of motion. specifically, i can't hinge my wrist back more than 20-25 degrees so i can't do the classic holding a tray move for the backswing like brian shows in the correct hinging of the wrists for stopping the slice.

i just started hitting again and the backswing feels terribly awkward since i still am trying to get a good set like i used to in the backswing. i did find out that 20-25 degrees tho is great for impact since it is almost a cheat to hinge my right wrist as much as it will go as i'm going into impact lol.

is there any compensations i should make in the backswing other than making half swings and relying on my bad wrist to get decent compression on the ball?

any advice is appreciated. TIA!

Hello mate,

I have exactly the same problem as you....

With a "correct" grip, a flat left wrist at the top leads to my right elbow being too close to my left, and my right palm is always trying to pull itself away from the left thumb joint.......

I have compensated for this by SLIGHTLY weakening my left hand grip, and SLIGHTLY strengthening my right hand grip.....this allows a flat left wrist with the right forearm hanging in the correct position at the top..
:)

wow, you hit it on the head with that description. whenever i try a full swing, i feel that i totally lose control of the clubhead since my right hand is screaming to come off the grip since my right wrist can't hold that hinge angle. so lately, i been hitting with half swings to remember what good contact feels like and the twistaway isnt too painful on the wrist.

i'll try your grip at the range this weekend on full swings and let you know how it goes. thanks
