Backswing Plane line...Whats Optimal????

Brian has alluded to Tiger trying to be too much like O'meara on the backswing. My question is...when viewing a player from down the line, should an optimal backswing have the clubhead coming up:

1) the plane line extending from the ball through the neck (i.e, still on plane, but on the outside of the plane cone)?

2) the plane line extending from the ball through the waist (i.e., still on plane, but on the inside of the plane cone)?

3) in the middle of 1 and 2?

thanks

There are several planes for which to swing on, the main thing is that the base of the plane does not change. "Optimal" could be a tough word as history shows many good golfers each swinging on different planes being effective.

As EdZ refereed, to watch the elbow is referring to making the sure elbow is one the selected plane (whichever used during the swing) from release point through follow-thru (both arms straight).
