Backswing question/ please help

Hello Manzella instructors and forum members,

I was wondering if I could get some advice on a backswing issue I have been having for some time? When I take the club to the top, my hands are 30 plus inches ( hitting driver) from being behind my head (from face on). I have tried softening my left arm but it does not seem to help. I do not have any flexibility issues but something is stopping the club from getting behind my head at the top. I have studied the swings of a lot of good drivers of the ball and it seems like most of them have their hands behind their head at the top of the swing with the driver. Any ideas to help me get the club back farther would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, kermitm

I'm certainly not Brian, seems to me that you can't get there simply because you are not that skinny. Your left arm runs into your left chest and you are done. Having said that your position looks pretty damn good to me.

Thanks for the reply. The picture is a little missleading becasue my shirt is not tucked in. I am 6'5" and 200 pounds. Not very heavy at all for my height

Just curious on why you want that position and what do you feel it would do for you ?

Agree Steve about that position looking good! I wish i could get to that position! I have very broad shoulders and a thick chest from years of lifting, and I get maybe a little more than a 1/2 backswing ...

To get the hands farther back, you would need either more armswing, shoulder turn or both.Don't see the need for either in this case unless you want to compete at LD competitions, only content to hit 1 out of 6 fairways.

11 o'clock or 12 o'clock hands are bad news?

If you have trouble incorporating that into your swing, it might be easier to study the ones who do not
have their hands behind their head at the top of the swing with the driver. There are plenty of of them too.

Maybe tilt your chin a little, but that's a stretch to get them behind your head from where you are. As long as your shoulder points a little behind the ball, there's not much reason to keep reaching or you risk just bending backward to get there.

Your hands are too far away because they counter balance your hips being too far forward.

Could be, but could it also be the other way round, IOW the hips going there to counteract where he doesn't want to be ie less centred. If he can't get his arms any further because of a blocking shoulder and he wants to be centred because he thinks that's good then he would shift his hips target-wards to get centred, right? Vicious circle really at the end of the day arising out his wish to be centred whilst still employing a full turn and armswing.

Or that

Thanks so much for the help. This is the reason that I love this place. I have spent a lot of time trying to figure this out and I think Kevin and Wulsy gave me some great ideas to work on
