Backyard putting green

Tried building one at a friend's place once. Dug up a lot of dirt and put on a lot of good soil plus a nice thick layer of sand. Planted some good quality Bent grass on it but before long the local cow grass took over and made a mess of it all. Our bad, we just did not have enough time to attend to the weeding and maintenance of it to pull it off.

Yup, I put one in last year. I dug all the top soil off my drain field and put down 50 tons of sand and mixed in some peat (~1800 sqft). The green is growing in nicely and I mow it whenever I want to putt or about every three to four days. I have good drainage so I don't need to be ontop of diseases like the ones put on native soils. I did put in a sprinkler system since it is a sand base green and it dries out quicker in the summer. You need to get a good greens mower which a good used one will run you $500 -$1000. I put down fertilizer about 2-3 weeks and a fungicide needs to be put down before snow falls.

If you have kids it is great, my 3 year old son loves to play on it, he runs through the sprinklers and loves to putt on it. Here's the site that got me into it: Putting-Greens.com

How about one that uses synthetic turf or grass? Can't recall the name of the one that Jim Furyk endorses, but supposedly one has a difficult time telling the difference between it and real grass without the hassles and maintenance headaches of same.

If anyone has or wants a real grass putting green, and has questions, feel free to ask.

I am a golf course superintendent.
