What do you guys make of this??

"Work on allowing your left wrist(for right-handers)to move into a slightly concave or "cupped’ position as you swing. This will produce more speed as the clubhead moves down toward the ball."

One of your favorite guys Brian, and a N.O. guy too I think.

"Carl is truly an original with his pioneering anatomical approach to the golf swing."

I can't disagree with Larry.

He may mean as you swing to the top - i.e. cupped at the top. Moving from cupped to flat(or arched) on the DS did in fact work quite well for Hogan.

This may be true.....but the thing is that most ppl who read this tip wouldn't know "the rest of the story" (i.e. most people don't have a very good understanding of the swing...or Hogan's).

IMO you have to think if it really is good (and complete- the fact that we have to guess exactly what the statement meant is not good) advice for a beginner.

BTW....I hope this is an exact quote....u gotta be sure of these things before we hang him out to dry.

Birdie Man,
I agree, so here is the rest of the story. Taken from Carl Rabito's web site..

Quick Tip: Power In The Golf Swing
The hinging and unhinging of the wrists is the major speed producer in the golf swing. In fact, a recent study by a sports medicine institute concluded that approximately 75 percent of the clubhead’s speed at impact comes from the unhinging of the wrists on the downswing. Work on allowing your left wrist(for right-handers)to move into a slightly concave or "cupped’ position as you swing. This will produce more speed as the clubhead moves down toward the ball.

all i'm going to say is the stronger the grip, the more "cup" you'll see to keep the clubface square. I demonstrated this in my older threads with pictures.

Jim-
Azinger and Duval are two of the strongest grippers I know. Both have pretty flat wrist. Couples would fit your description though

cdog- It maybe impossible to hit a shot without using your hands. I'd argue that you create more speed with locked hands and active arms than with just your hands and no arms.

Mr. Rabito's statements can be somewhat confusing to the casual golfer. It's for certain that the wrists must hinge and unhinge but the wrists are hinged by the hands movement, which can be activated by muscles or by the momentum of the swinging club. The wrists are only hinges that allow the hands to move back and forth, they do not move the hands.

Duval had a completely flat left wrist with a shut face, if his clubface was square, it would've had a big cup....like Couples.

Jim,
I understand if you're speaking about the position of the club at the top of the swing.
While Duval and Azinger are very "closed" at the top they both open the face on the downswing to impact without cupping the wrist. They both hit fades.

"they both open the face on the downswing to impact without cupping the wrist."

That's true not only for those two, but anyone else, because cupping the wrist on the downswing CLOSES the clubface.
