Baddeley's tee shot

What went wrong with Baddeley's swing on the 18th tee? Massive divot! You could definitely see he was nervous as hell. His body was moving so quickly prior to taking it back.

Time to go back to S&T? :)

I am trying to understand that swing in D-Plane numbers...

So his angle of attack would have been a few degrees in the negative...he hit ball ball first then ground.

Presumably he was hoping to hit it at 0* (or thereabouts)...so he was hoping for a swing direction close to O* (i.e. his ball at bottom of downswing.

But because he went negative with his AoA, his club face would have still been slightly open, his swing direction would have been slightly out to in, his resultant path would have been 'open'.... The nett result: some sort of push-fade.

Have I got this right?

Once played with a good player who hit so far behind it with the driver that the divot still had the tee stuck in it. He just drove the driver into the ground and never moved his low body at all. Funny to watch, Baddely must have been mortified.

It was certainly not a "well timed release."

Now that I had a chance to watch the entire thing, having a player's mindset, I prefer to focus on the laser 5 iron he hit on his next shot. How bout the mental game needed to hit that shot after the tee shot disaster?

I agree Kevin. I watched it happen and I was thinking to myself, what would be going through my mind at that point. I'm sure it was a combination of bewilderment, embarrassment, guilt etc. You know everyone is just waiting to see if he would fall apart on that next shot.
He was able to collect himself and execute a beautiful shot. Give some credit to his caddy for helping him to get back to his routine and focus on the factors surrounding the next shot. And to Jason Day for walking over and giving him a don't worry about it pat on the back.
I was really pulling for him to hit a great shot and I was happy for him when he did. That was an impressive bounce back.

Exactly Kevin.
The book "With Winning in Mind" covers exactly that mindset and it is the mindset of high level athletes. In Baddely's mind it was simply not how he hits a golf shot and he forgot about it right away. But, you can bet he remembers his next shot because it was "how he hits a golf shot". The subconscious mind will try to perform what or how the conscious mind is thinking.

Major stones.

And good that you remind us of how the best have mastered much more than ball striking.

Yeah, it's easy for all the armchair quarterbacks to rag on pros for bad shots. Meanwhile, it's the toughest game on the planet and the mental fortitude you have to have to play it at the highest level is astounding.

Oh, if I were in that situation I'd choke my guts out. But it's fun to watch the pros do the same thing!

when he hit that tee ball, I was wondering if he was still thinking about the putt he had just missed on 17 to close the match.
