Brian: Some time ago you said that when you had lessons with Ben Doyle he got you to bend forward from the hips more and got you more over the ball. Could you go into the significance of this? I have recently been working on getting my trail forearm on the shaft plane at delivery position through and post impact and have noticed that this is more easy to do when I am more over the ball. Is this why Ben likes more bend from the hips? Thanks.

As you said, I think Ben's setup position makes it easier to keep the trail forearm on the shaft plane.

Bending forward from the hips more also allows, the arms to hang from the shoulders in a relaxed manner. This position allows the neck to be parallel to the ground, a characteristic most good ball strikers have.

was watching dan forsman on today's telecast ... seems he has much more forward tilt than the other players ... is the degree of optimal forward tilt a function of a player's height (i think geo archer had a lot of forward tilt) and shaft length, or is it just a matter of personal preference? thanks.

The more you bend from the waist, the LESS axis tilt you need.
i'm a little confused here ... which tilt are we talking about -primary axis tilt or secondary axis tilt? my original question was about the amount of bend from the hips that dan forsman has (primary axis tilt?) it seems like he has more than most (looks at least 45 degrees to the horizontal)and i was wondering what is optimal.

Brian,

I had a look at the clip of your swing, and I think from waist high coming down and through impact things look fantastic. Your solid hand action is something I think we can all try to emulate.

A couple of people mentioned that you tend to get things a bit behind you early in the backswing and then have an "up" move to get to the top position (I think Redgoat mentioned this).

Although it is difficult to tell from the front view, you seem to have quite a bit of knee bend at address and your hips turn in a relatively flat plane. Have you tried bending less in the knees and bending more from the hips (i.e. sticking the butt out more)? This would tip the pelvis more towards the ball and the hips will turn more on an inclined plane, which will mean that you'll need less "lift" from the arms to get to the top position. This will take some strain off your shoulder joints.

Cheers,

Jono.

brian- welcome back from your honeymoon and congrats ... had this question re: forward (primary?) axis tilt before you left >>>>>>>>>

<<<<<<<<<< your response mentioned axis tilt as a function of waist bend - i'm not sure if we are talking about the same thing, but could you comment on the optimal degree of forward (as opposed to side) tilt. thanks.

MORE WAIST BEND=LESS AXIS TILT
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?
Very interested in some clues to the next setup article. Do you like the "modern"setup ala Tiger, Adam Scott, et al which is very tall, head high, back straight?

kelley said he didnt want instruction to be kept vague but once again manzella internaet champ is vague. Maybe cuz he doesn't know what he's talking about. c'mon you peeps.
