I was reading Brian's Old Memorial post and was wondering...what do you think makes a club "well run?" What are a few things a good private club can do to be great? I'd love to hear about what Old Memorial does so well.

Old Memorial...model GOLF club.

NO PARTICULAR ORDER

1. Virtually invisible Golf Staff.

2. Perfect Golf Course to play over and over.

3. Three (that's right three) practice areas. Two of them very secluded. One mostly for short game.

4. Awesome Men's Locker room.

5. Places to stay for guest or out-of-town members that is laid out PERFECT for what it is used for.

6. Incomparable customer service.

7. Four-Star food.

8. Very Private, without being stuffy.

9. Walking only (real golf) with great caddy staff, unless you can't walk.

10. Year-round great weather.

I'll be glad to elaborate on any of the above.

A Great Club

There are probably a lot of things that make a lot of clubs in the world "a great place to belong". Speaking from my experiences at Old Memorial there are a few things that I have seen that make it what it is....It's privacy and exclusivity....You won't find it advertised on any billboards or magazines. To get there...you have to be going there... At its entrance there are no big signs or great statues saying that you have arrived...Just a small gatehouse on a very private thickly wooded 2 lane road leading you back a mile or two and opening up to the club. The practice facilities...There are two driving ranges, a warm-up range that is conveniently located near the course and a practice range that is about a 10 minute cart ride(no exaggeration) from everything else...Here you can hit from anywhere and not be bothered by a soul for hours...There are also 2 chipping greens with bunkers about 100 yards apart from each other on another part of the property....The course is very fair and there are a good variety of holes...Reachable par fours...A few long par fives that aren't reachable and it is a place that proves not all par threes have to be 240 yards to be difficult. Its a course that you play for the first time and remember every hole. It's a walking only club(with no cart paths!) and every caddie I have had was very knowledgeable of the course. As Brian said the food is second to none and the clubhouse and men's locker room are beautiful without being gaudy and overstated. It's also the only place I have ever been to where there is a Havemeyer Trophy sitting in the men's grille...My college team was lucky enough to be hosted here every April for our Spring Break and I am probably not doing Old Memorial or other "great clubs" justice with these few generic details, but every year me and my buddies left Old Memorial we always made it a powerball course( a place we would join if we won the powerball).
