My good friend and student, Nathan Smith, tied for the stroke play medal at the US Mid Am in Long Island. He's defending champion so Im impressed with his play having a bulls eye on his back. Nathan is the epitiome of what a teacher wants in a student. The way he absorbs and applies information is second to none. I wish him luck in match play.

After watching him perform at the Masters I dont think anything could get him nervous. Me? Ill be looking for updates every ten minutes!

Congratulations Kevin, a player like Nathan is great for business and a joy to teach, but don't you get more enjoyment watching a slicer-hacker hit his first draw and the look of the sheer child like enjoyment in his face?

I really dont look at it as good for business and never will. I wont be posting youtube clips with resumes off his achievements any time soon. Its not like its on my business card. Hes also a good friend and I know how hard he works and its good to see how that pays off. I was hesitant to even post this up because i dont ever want to make it out like its about me. No need to conratulate me. Im not hitting the shots. Im just proud of him and wish him well. I do think it will make a good thread for discussion on how his VSP was raised and the changes we made to avoid injury, upgrade distance and efficiency and how horizontal launch is so critical at that level.

I absolutely get as much if not more enjoyment from watching the less inclined hit good shots and see the looks on their faces and reactions. Couldnt agree more.

Kevin, a friend of mine played in front of Nathan at the pine valley member guest this year, Nathan made 8 birdies in a row! He sat with Nathan and Buddy Marucci at dinner and Buddy said Nathan made it look easy and it was the best golf he had ever seen......

I would not mind hearing your thoughts on getting the VSP numbers up. I made some progress with Brian on this and I feel my shots are improving. Before winter I will either go see Brian in Louisville or rent some time on trackman somewhere.

I will go over the changes as promised. It will make for an interesting read for some. VSP is huge for him. He loses his ability to turn it over when VSP gets low.

Nathan just made the semifinal. Has a tough matchup next against a guy who is mowing down some big names.

I played two groups behind Nathan in the stroke play rounds last weekend at the Mid Am. To shoot even par on those two golf courses with the draw that we had (30 mph winds each day) was amazing. He must have had total control of his ball flight. That was a terrifc performance. I had a USGA official tell me that the course we played Sunday - The Bridge - was playing to a rating of 78 and a slope of 149.

I was paired with a former Mid Am champion and former walker cupper who has also played in numerours US Opens and Senior Opens and he told me after the round Sunday that the two rounds were the toughest combination (course and conditions) that he has ever played in. Of course that did not make me feel much better about my scores :)

Anywho - Just wanted to give you an idea of how good of golf these guys that have made it to match play (and keep winning) are playing. They have my respect ;)

BTW - Nathan is 4 up at the turn in his Semi Final Match !!!

Could be an all Pittsburgh final. Nathan 5 up after 12 and Sean Knapp needs to overcome a 1 down deficit at the turn.

......if anyone besides me cares:p
