I have a question that has been driving me crazy for the last couple of years. If ones body type is say built like a Craig Stadler, should the swing be more upright or more around the body. I never seem to get a real straight answer to this. Thanks dave

Tendency towards upright. Don't know many fat dudes who swing around their bodies too well--too much to "get around" perhaps?

I don't think their is a body type - swing shape correlation. Too many exceptions. Look at Chris Patton and Billy Casper. Both fat guys who hit in to out draws. Bruce Lietzke was a tall slender dude who was an out hand path fader. I thinks it's more the power source for the type of body, and, as stated, flexibility.

Yeah I agree the flexibility and the too much around. I quess it's all a matter of trial and error, but I'd take Billy Casper's putting stroke anyday. Thanks for the feedback guys. dave ps was Chris Patton a student of Butch Harmon at one time or still is?

Same deal with Daly eh.....or at least his backswing goes inside a lot. (not to mention super-DUPER flexible...granted- he is an anomaly)

Is he a TSP guy in the downswing tho?

...

BTW this advice is for a friend though right Dave?

Hehe just joking for sure. ;)

(both Stadlers would take my money)

BTW some of you guys don't beat around the bush much with the wording eh? ("fat guys") Haha...

Better be easy.....Dave is from Canada.....we're rugged......we don't screw around.....:D

(just look at his icy stare.....)

I have tried hitting with my belly, but the darn ball only goes 10 yards. Yeah I agree with you birdie man, both Stadlers would take my money too. One of the guys I work with told that John Daly is now working with Harmon and that he has, wait for it,,,,, shortened his swing. Has anyone else heard about this. Dave PS.....as for the icy stare. It only makes the sheep nervous

The only swing type I would say works better for a particular body type is that a flat swing probably works better for short guys. Like the obvious example of Hogan having a flat swing at 5'7" or whatever he was. I don't really see a flat swing being a good choice for a guy who is well over six feet tall. The only reason for this is that the golf club is proportionately longer for a short guy so that means a flatter swing. Maybe the shorter guy gets shorter clubs but in a lot of cases they don't but instead just get a flatter lie. Not really too sure about this but in my experience with real people it seems to work that way too. Charles Warren hits bombs with a flat swing and he's short. But I don't see any guys like Davis Love or Steve Jones pulling any stunts like that.

I don't think anything special applies to fat guys as long as they can freely swing around their gut, haha. A really good fat guy player I once knew used to tell me that his gut helped him control his swing and losing weight might affect his game negatively. He said he liked to setup with his hands just under his gut and turn his gut ahead of impact. It sounds funny to type that but he really was serious. I think Craig Stadler has said similar things about not wanting to lose weight.
