Billy Mayfair's putting stroke

I think the single most important aspect of a putting stroke is its consistency. You can do whatever you want. If you do it the same every time, you'll learn to 'see' your putts a certain way, and will match that to your stroke.

It's not ideal, but can be extremely effective if the consistency is there. I'd take a guy with consistent Sam PuttLab numbers over one that's less consistent, but more optimal.

I'm not sure that I would say that D-Plane has little effect on putts, mainly because the big effect I think it has is those who understand it will start to understand that the face is much more important in putting than the path (aka the stroke).

I understand what you are saying granato, but the D-Plane exists in putting and those who can consistently control the putter face are usually well ahead of the rest of the putters. Then it becomes more of a case of green reading and speed control.

Thanks for the vid.

The reason I don't consider D-plane having much impact on putting is because the ball is rolling end-over-end so quickly and any flight time is basically nonexistent. I just think D-plane as being a 3D plane having to do with the flight of the ball, since there's no ball flight to speak in putting, I don't D-plane in putting.

As far as start direction goes, Pelz and Co. have been preaching that face controls about 85%-87% of the initial direction for years. Putting and D-plane can have that in common, but I think it practically speaking ends there. I could be wrong, but I consider the D-plane more complex than just describing the initial start direction of putts.

I think trouble with a certain direction of break might have more to do with the players proclivity/bias towards misaiming the putter face. I also can be wrong about this too.
