Blades versus Cavity Backs...

My best ball striking came about 2-3 years ago with some Hogan musclebacks. I decided to go for forgiveness with the Ping G2's and while they are rediculously long(strong lofts) I actually feel like my iron striking is less consistent and I have little control. Ball just comes rocketing off the face high and long, but who knows where.

I'm actually thinking about going back to blade, heard great things about the Nike forged blades, but wondered what your guys opinions on blades versus game improvement irons is?

I'm currently about an 8 handicap.

Best of both worlds:

Taylor Made TP R7 irons.

The irons of Brian Manzella and David Toms.

If you want 'em, I'll beat any price you can find.

i personally like blades because you can really tell exactly where your missing it. thin toe etc.. and adjust accordingly. I also think the whole forgiveness issue is overrated i emailed golf labratories the company that does the testing for alot of club companies and also golf digest with there golf robots. they said the difference between a blade like the hogan apex and a callaway x-18 with a 5 iron on a 1/2 inch miss is between 1-3 yards. It will feel like you missed it alot worse on the blade wich is the idea feedback

I agree with those figures - or at least the real-life equivalents... Over 18 holes the same degree of ball striking with blades versus cavity ( given same lofts) will amount to probably and extra 2-3 greens missed (max). Trouble is that being on a green but 60 feet away compared with being 70 feet away on fringe/light rough makes little difference to the score( for me at least)- it is usually 3 shots.

Where they used to make difference is in 3/4/5 irons but so many use hybrids now ... the key is in finding the right blade...for me Mizuno TP9 ( slightly larger than most, wingback design, purest sweetspot i have found)... released as left hand only in USA but v. popular Euro right hand model ... now discontinued - newer replacements just not the same! But then they were designed by computer:rolleyes:

I play blades and agree with the concept that cavity backs are a bit overrated(not saying i wouldn't play a cavity back). However, whatever fits your eye and gives you confidence over the ball should be the club of choice. My favorite line I heard from a fellow range rat was "Don't play blades because Golf Digest said so" lol

Here's a question:

If pros were allowed to choose their weapons on personal preference vs what they are paid to play, would there still be ~50% CBs out on tour?

I think the % of CBs in tour bags is misleading due to the $$$ factor.

Tall,

I play as a 6 and I hit the Mizuno MP-32. I just ordered a set of Titleist 755 Forged. They are a good mix of a blade type head and topline with some preimeter weighting.

I feel that it is always nice to have a set of blades around, to practice with because of the instant feedback you get with them.

Hey J.

I think you will love the 755's. I put them in the bag 4 months ago.

I keep a set of '88' Hogan Apex's to practice with.

I think too many people play out of their ego.

I play Titleist 775s that are meant for a 15 handicapper and the only thing that these can't due to well is hit low, it is a bit of a challenge. However they do everything else and i can score great with them.

If i played/practiced as much as i did in college i'd probably play a blade or something like that but otherwise now, i need something that is basically an idiot stick.

Oh, and unless he changed since i've last seem Tom Bartlett played, he is using Callaway X-14 pro series. ;)

Pretty much agree, I am not good enough (Yet) to play my blades very much, but they are just so nice to look at.

I imagine I will play the 755's 95% of the time.

I played Mizuno MP-14s for four years and I think I actually hit them further and more consistent than my current cavity backs. I tend to get lazy with cavity backs.

I have a little test tonight with SWING TUTOR counting distance and direction as well as a friend with good eyes watching.

7-iron
Blade - MP33 DG R300 - Distance 175 max
CB - TM cgb stock graphite R shaft - Distace 187 max

BTW, i just can't believe the gap is so big.

MP33
Iron 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 PW
Loft(°) 19 22 25 28 32 36 40 44 48

TM CGB
Iron 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 PW
Loft(°) 19 21 23 26 30 34 39 44

so TM CGB 7 rion is about MP33 5/6 iron

That is the way

My friend told me about that too. So, why we just play something eay and crazy long?

I've heard really good things about the Callaway's as well. Sharp looking irons.

Question does the amount of offset on a club help somebody with a horizontal hinge more than somebody with an angled hinge? Since an angled hinge has a bit of layback, I was thinking less offset would actually help.

I've been playing golf for 40 years. Always played a blade except for 2 years with Ping's. Last few sets were Mizuno MP37, Titleist bulletbacks, Hogan Apex (several iterations). At the end of November I picked up a brand new in the plastic/box set of Bridgestone J33 cavity backs ($355 shipped via that auction site). Had two range sessions before winter set in. OUTSTANDING!
Can't wait for the snow to melt.

More offset helps angled hingers not the other way around.
