Blind Putting

I was in a tournament yesterday, and was hitting the ball extremely well. through 12 holes i was 2 over. I ended the round with 41 putts and 5 three putts including a 3 putt par, which has got to be the one of the worst feelings ever. the main problem was my speed control. I picked up a drill where if you close your eyes while practicing putting, it helps you get a feel for the green speed. i tried it today and it worked well. anybody else ever heard of this or tried it? any other tips would be helpful as well.

variations of that are helpful for full shots too. something like hit a shot, think about what it felt like(how far, what shot shape, etc) and then see how close you were to estimating the result.

Longball, my old teacher (RIP) George Knudson said there were five keys to putting.

1. Line
2. Speed
3, 4, and 5 are Speed too.

I've played with a handful of "GREAT" putters and their speed control is what separates them from the rest. You can't make a curved putt unless you can blend the line with the speed.

If closing your eyes helps. Keep doing it!! Let me know your progress!

...

any other methods of ingraining the feel for speed besides closing your eyes?

fingersen,

On your local practice green, spend a while putting one (right) handed....don't be concerned with direction per se, just concentrate on rolling the ball as if you were throwing it towards your target.....

Start with a 10 foot putt and work your way up in 10 feet intervals, after being reasonably accurate with the prior distance......note the extra umppfff you have to apply for the longer putts....

Then do the same again with both hands on the putter....retain the feel!!....

Putt to the fringe, don't worry about the hole. Just putt to the fringe.

what does that mean?

anyway, the best advice I have gotten on putting came from... where do you think? Brian, who says to put like you chip... so now I put like I chip, which has helped me tremendously in being able to be more accurate as well as judging the distance much better... I wasn't a very good putter for a while, I had a bad case of the Sergio yips... as in, at one point, I could judge distance and line perfectly, when I was younger. Then I started getting WAY too technical as I got older (I think it has to do with thinking your going to refine your already great stroke to perfection) and I ruined my stroke, from there it was a battle on trying to figure out what I was doing, and continuing to try and find the perfect stroke... anyway I guess that only works if your a good chiper, and have a good short game, but if you do, its great advice.

It's one of the best things to do for distance control. Without the hole you don't have to worry about aim. All you have to worry about is distance. Hit it just hard enough to touch the fringe.

are you talking about doing this on a practice green, because im thinking.... if the fringe is 30 feet from the hole... your not going to want to touch that fringe.;)
