Breathing during your swing

I had an interesting question brought up in a lesson yesterday about if you are breathing or not during your swing. IMO, it would be like stretching or working out, and if you aren't breathing, you aren't getting enough oxygen to your muscles to swing freely. Let me know your thoughts.

i seem to hold my breathe during the actual swing. but my swing is so high tempo(!) that its not really depriving my body of oxygen, and i think its the same for most of us

hes something to try. i tried it when i first started playin but forgot about it. try whistleing a single tone throughout your swing, and try to keep it constant. i remeber it now, because i cant whistle, so had to hum the note lol

you are right, i don't think most people breathe during their actual swing, but what about at address? this particular student was holding his breath as soon as the club addressed the ball. i thought it was interesting.

there's this trick I use when playing with others (gullible golfers)...especially for money...

I ask them whether they breath in our out during the stroke. They usually don't know, so I ask them to think about it next time. This puts them off the next shot. Then I tell them that Tiger's secret for hitting it long is to take one breath in on the backstroke and two breaths out on the downstroke. I say this in the most serious way again without cracking up.

If you can pull this off, it will give you a few shots over your opponent!

Or you can ask them if they blink right before or right after they hit the ball. Or if shadows on the ground bother them as much as they do you. There's a lot of them you can use ;).

Edit:

Didn't mean to get off topic! My opinion is that if Nicklaus thought it was important (monitoring your breathing, that is), then maybe it is. I like to, if thinking about it at all, breath out slowly right before taking it back.

...but next time they may beat you... I played a few of my best rounds 15 yrs ago after reading Kjell Enhager´s book Quantum Golf where the main advice is to be quiet and mindful and just breathe in in the backswing, saying a semisecret mantra (super) ... then exhale (once) in the downswing, saying another personalized mantra (fluid)...
