Brian is a genius...

Well, we thawed out up here in DC, and i got a chance to put all the basement and driving range practice into play. After buying and practicing the NSA2 pattern about a month ago, i shot my first ever even par (9 holes). Normally, i play to about a 10hcp. Granted, the course played very short today (firm fairways roll forever), but even so, you still have to execute. I have been able to simplify my swing swing thoughts down to two simple ideas, twistaway and wedding ring up. Missed one fairway, and one green. One bogey, one birdie. I have never struck the ball so pure.

Thanks Brian, and the rest of this forum.

A belated Xmas miracle ... the birth of a scratch golfer ... a 30 day miracle to boot ... !!!!

How do you intend to maintain and apply your newly found skill ... consciously or non-consciously ... because sometimes the transition from conscious control to non-conscious cruising doesn't work well for some reason ...???

Steve, honestly this is my fear. I have in the past had those 'aha moments' where i think i got it, just to hack some more. The difference today though is that before i would swing away, not knowing why something might work and others not. Now I'm consciously swinging with specific feelings i have based on the NSA pattern videos. My goal is to basically swing everyday at least a few times, to keep the feels that are working, and make notes as well.

Any advice on this matter would be appreciated.

I would continue to keep notes, and write down exactly what you feel like you are doing and what you are focusing on. Then make a video of yourself hitting several good shots. Date the notes and the video so you can reference them later. If down the road you start trying to add new improvements, etc., and end up getting lost and start hacking again, you can go back and analyze and compare your "good" swings (video and notes) against your current "not so good" swings. This helps me to not "lose my place" and have to start over so to speak, because it's easy to get lost in a maze of your own BS, if you know what I mean.

If you are still in a conscious mode, I would suggest you test yourself by going back to your old mechanics ... and in that way you will have a conscious comparison of wrong and right. In this way you will sense what's going wrong when your game tends to collapse under stress, which happens to all of us and we revert back to bad habits.

Only repetitive practice will embed the good swing thoughts into your brain and neuro-muscular system ... and that can take several months to ingrain on a non-conscious basis. Good luck and work hard at it.

Do you know why it works? If so, then you can shake of the fear that plagues many golfers.

I am speculating that this dread is common to all, and not an a virus of infinite strains!

What caused sleepless nights for me is not understanding why such and such worked etc.

Understanding NHA in the light of "ball impact geometry" is much like the legend to a map.

Execution WILL elude you from time to time, but all you have to do if the wheels feel like coming off is take another gander at the map.

The majority of golfers claim that they just want to be "consistent." The danger for a consistent player (say a guy who has put NHA to good effect;)) is the siren call of perfection. I would guess that a great number of forum members play a lot of golf "swing" in preference to golf score.

Another piece of advice is soak up the good feelings that your level par 9 holes produced. There is NO substitute for confidence rooted in actual events.

Oddly, my best performances were always tinged (privately) with a haunting doubt, based on the fact that I thought I had done the golfing equivalent of capturing lightning in a bottle. I was far happier in my comfort zone.

Congrats on the success. If you understood why you were twisting away and finishing as Brian prescribes then it was not a fluke! Best to find some pigeons and run the table before anyone gets on to you! :D

BTW ... if Brian is a 'genius', his IQ must be above 140 ... ya think ..??!!!!

Congrats. Loads of mental game stuff out there. The simplest one I have ever used was Inner Game of Golf...play golf in the awareness mode instead of trying, doctrine of the easy, and 'back-hit' chant to occupy the conscious inner critic. And it sort of makes golf more of a "mystical" experience instead of a score grind.

Probably pretty close. (if you're serious)

Not that IQ is everything.

I'd imagine there is no definitive test.

How can we measure you Steve?? :p

Well, i dont kow if Brian's IQ is above 140 or not, but i measure him by what he can teach, not what a test measures. FYI, from what i learned in NSA2, here are videos of my before and after (DL). For a hacker like me, fixing the face really improved my impact position. There was no thought into how i wanted to look, just results.

Before:
YouTube - DTL 9i Rope 102310.avi

After:
YouTube - DL TAWRU

P.S. - video of after was taken day after my first ever round of even par.

Better path eh Peter? Tumble.

Be careful w your joints off that concrete man...I used to do the same thing. (thin carpet on top) Held up well for many many swings...but I am more rickety at the moment...

Thanks birdie. Its not clear in the photo but I have two layers of carpet padding underneath. Even with that though you right about the joints i do feel it. Soon I'll be getting a real mat as well.
