If you have found my site during a search about The Golfing Machine, or are searching about "TGM" after finding us, I would like to explain our position on the work by the late Homer Kelley.
Any avid golf swing researcher will run across this book in their search for golfing truths. Before the internet age, when I began my search, the book was both difficult to find and way ahead of its time.
My study of the information in it lead to a long and fruitful relationship with Ben Doyle, who Mr. Kelley made his first "authorized instructor." The amount of information I learned from Ben and The Golfing Machine was more than invaluable to my development as a golf instructor.
I became an authorized instructor in 1989, and rose to the highest level attainable, G.S.E.D.
As I searched high and low for more real golf science, I continued to search for additional interpretations of the book and visited with other high level authorized instructors to that end. It become apparent to me that while The Golfing Machine was a great attempt at applying science to the golf swing, it was far from totally accurate and was incomplete as well.
After the death of Homer Kelley's wife, Sally, the book and small company was purchased. The ownership began a yearly teaching summit in 2005. I was asked to present at that summit and to speak about my mentor, Ben Doyle, who was being honored. I have attended each summit since then.
At the second summit, I met Dr. Aaron Zick, a brilliant engineer, who had begun to research the golf swing at the behest of the Golfing Machine ownership. I learned many concepts then and since from Dr. Zick that were rooted in hard science, which were subsequently integrated into my teaching, videos and my writings on this site and others.
This inspired me to find other scientists in the golf field who could further unlock the mysteries of the golf swing that had eluded me and other instructors. I should note that Mr. Kelley was not a degreed scientist and did not have ready access to one during his compiling of his book.
This search has led me to Dr. Paul Wood a physicist who is the senior researcher at PING golf, Dr. Robert Neal, a biomechanist whose firm Golf BioDynamics is a leader in their field, as well as numerous other scientists who have applied the laws of force and motion to golf swing research.
To this end, I organized and held my first Brian Manzella Golf Swing Symposium in October of 2010, where Drs. Zick, Wood, and Neal were the scientific panel. It was a successful education event attended by golf pros from four countries.
The Golfing Machine company changed its "authorized instructor agreement" for 2010-2011, and has made it difficult for me and other associates of mine, who were also authorized instructors, to have the editorial freedom on my website that has made it so successful.
At the Brian Manzella Golf Academy, and at BrianManzella.com, we stand for scientific research, editorial freedom, and the best integration of those pursuits to provide golfers and golf instructors the very best available information on the golf swing, how to perform it, and how to adjust it when it is necessary.
So, I have resigned as an authorized instructor at the highest level, and will not discuss the interpretations or minutia of the text of The Golfing Machine anymore on my website.
If you must ask a direct "TGM" question, feel free to PM or email me or one of my instructors and we will be glad to assist you.
Golf questions of any kind will always be allowed and encouraged at BrianManzella.com. We just ask to keep it non-"TGM" specific.
In our opinion, we provide the best information on the subject of how the golf swing works in the field. Our "Project 1.68" has already moved the bar in golf swing science and application, and will continue to be updated daily, as new information becomes available, unencumbered by editorial constraints.
