Brian (PGA TOUR pitching)

Watching the PGA today I saw how all the greens slope away and have zero rough. Well, unfortunatly that is the way most courses here in Orlando are. No greenside rough. Which means tight lies aroung the greens.

Too my point. How do those guys hit those low pitch shots from say 5-10 yrds off the green then have them check. Mine (when I don't skull) tend to run unless I flop it. I use a 60 sw or my 56 sw. VJ seems to be a master at this shot and would love to be able to do it.

Thanks

This a GREAT question!

I videoed a couple of guys (inc. DT) doing the 'Tour Pitch.'

It is no less than a stone "trick shot," but everyone does it and the great majority do it exceptionally well.

I will film a segment on it this weekend and show you how I think you do it.

Thanks..If I could get over the mental nervousness over that shot and have the proper technique then the scores would drop nicely.

1) equiptment...believe it or not those wedges have grooves you can't buy in stores and i can almost GUARRANTEE that some of those wedges don't have "legal" grooves.

2) soft cover balls are important

3) Its kinda like your standard chip almost:
ball back
weight foward
and pinch the ball into the turf and watch your ball have a low skipper

I saw Tiger BACK UP a couple of short pitches like that at the Masters; I assumed equipment played a part of it...

Yup....if you think the grooves they play with is something you can buy retail think again.

The only companies that i know of that will sell you full maxed out box grooves (and this is going with their "claim") are:

Wilson with their wedges Padraig is using and they have a warning label as well as far as chewing up balls

Eilodian (sp?), they advertise milled grooves to USGA max depth/width

New Titleist Spin Milled "comes close" but aren't quite as maxed out as they could be.

-----

Other than those above i know of no other company, well maybe Solus but i'm not sure. Either way you see my point right? I have a Taylormade RAC "tour box groove" wedge and you can clearly see with the naked eye that my grooves are much wider/deeper than retail. When i compared my box groove to the Titty Spin Milled series they appear to be almost as wide but not as deep.

Lastly, i wouldn't be surprised if some guys play with illegal grooves the way the rough grows. I've heard some players grumbling on tour that "they think" some people cheat with wedge grooves.

Scratch in Eugene, OR just got a CNC milling machine and now (or will soon) offer any kind of grooves on their custom wedges. Their site is a little out of date but it is www.sgolfclubs.com. Ari is the guy to talk to there.

Ya...there are custom places all over the country that do custom wedges. I was mainly talking about OEM or "retail stuff."

However Ari may do really good work but IMO he isn't worth it. He Takes too long and is too expensive. I got a custom LW from Max Miller @ Custom Golf of Connecticut that took 24 hours to grind, spins as much as anything out there and cost me $50 less. Ari takes anywhere from 2-8 weeks depending on finish.

Just my opinion

They do some of my club work as well. Phone number is 203-323-7888.

I agree, you DO need to be patient with Ari, though I love the finished product (I have both irons and wedges from him).

I understand your sentiment, BUT how much did you pay for your driver? Bet you can make more pars/birds with a wedge than a driver. Just a thought. I wouldn't want to shell out 2 bills for a wedge either. However, I stay about 1 to 2 steps behind on Driver technology because I'm cheap. It may make sense to pony up on wedges and putters since those are the scoring clubs. Who knows!

I rescored all of my irons sunday night. I've noticed that I get more spin and the ball feels like it lingers on the club face.

Jim,

Put some sand paper on it... LOL..

But, friend of mine is using some salt to cover their iron wedge and make it so rusty...

If I am correct, Chip pitch and punch should be having the same kind of impact "flat left wrist". Except the reverse, Vertical hinge, angle hinging, horizontal hinge and full roll. The Tour pitch, would that be a reverse hinge.
