Brian...Shanking Open Faced Wedge Shots

Brian, imagine you had a student that was a really good player and knows the golf swing well...but occasionally he is the victim of a phantom shank. This only happens when he opens the face on short chips, pitches, lobs etc. Is it possible to open the face and stance to the point to where the sweetspot cant get off the shaft plane coming down and then cause the shank? Is it possible that when the face is opened so much he rolls the club inside and under the plane....and combined with the sweetspot being behind the shaft the shank shows up???

most people do this when they THINK they are swinging left enough to counter act the wide open face but they don't, they swing neutral or even IN-OUT and CLANK.

Jim, are you saying the student should concentrate on making sure the club is swung over to the left when the face is laid wide open and the stance is wide open as well? If the face is laid open and the hands are lowered...and the forward path is straight or in to out that prodeuces the clank huh?

Actually I shouldve asked..as the face gets more and more open as well the stance...should one be focused on making sure to swing more and more left?

I have no idea what causes it, but this is me exactly. It happens about once every two months and it always starts with an open face shot. Once I hit one several more follow. In order to stop it I have to think about my hands being closer to my body through the shot and then swinging left.

I'm confused. I don't understand why opening the face and opening the stance would put the sweet spot behind the shaft unless the person is standing in the wrong place. Sure, if they stood in the same place and did those things I could see an issue but shouldn't we be standing in a different place rotated around the ball?

LOL you're confused because you understand why you shouldn't be able to do it lol.

Picture this:

Open the face correctly
Open your stance correctly
Now swing well left on your new open stance line and wala, nice flop-ish like shot right?

Now picture this:

Open the face correctly
Open your stance correctly
DON'T swing on your new open stance line, swing more "towards the target" as they say.
