Brian: WHY do YOU like the single ball position?

Brian: I know that you like the single ball position as opposed to the ball moving further back in your stance with the shorter irons. You also recomend keeping the same ball position when hitting a low punched shot but suggest moving the aiming point further forward in the stance and standing CLOSER to the ball to achieve this shot. The hitter TGMers seem to love variable ball position. So does this mean that hitters should have variable ball position and swingers a constant ball position ? Why do you like the single spot ball position? Why do you think it is superior to the variable option? Thanks.

I have started practice the single ballposition, and find it hard work. Especially when chipping, where I have been used to play it way back (Pelz inspired). I've had the sha*** a couple of times. I have also had some of the best ballstriking ever, so I know it's a process of educating the hands and timing of the pivot.

Meanwhile I have been using kind of a compromice between my old and new ball position: Playing all longer irons 1" inside left heel, but playing the shorter irons (8-w) 2"-3" inside left heel. This with very good results (won two smaller turnaments in the same weekend last week).

Brian: In all respect of your honeymoon and all, I'm looking forward to your respond to Hue's question too.

Okay, and move the ball one inch forward of the left shoulder the ball goes 20 yards left? Just what are you saying, all ball positions outside of the left shoulder?

Brian, how about your take on this ball position, seems like the left shoulder and arm inline with the club would always give you pretty neutral ball positions for all clubs, less specialty shots. One could have his feet positioned to appear he is changing his ball position.

If you buy into the idea that the face squares up at vertical to the ground (clubshaft), then you HAVE to believe in one ball position.

So why do the hitters seem to like a variable ball position ? Also I understand that club makers make the lies of the clubs so that there is more forward lean in the shorter irons to accomadate the ball being further back in the stance. This means clubs are designed around a variable ball position. Thanks.

que?

clubshaft should have some 'lean' - i.e. LAG

anyone trying to get that specific with the shaft/square at vertical isn't going to be very consistent. One of the reasons that lag is good is that you have 'some' room for error....

Brian,
Ok, WHAT is the correct ball position. I try to hit everything slightly inside my left armpit.

ASSUMING YOUR ADDRESSING MY QUESTION WITH A QUESTION. I WILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTION. I HAVE DISCOVERED THAT WHEN I REALLY FOCUS AND STAY WITH THE SWING THAT I CAN STRIKE THE BALL VERY WELL FROM A FORWARD BALL POSITION EVEN WITH THE SHORT IRONS. I AM LOOKING FOR INFORMATION, FOR A REFERENCE POINT OF WHERE TO POSITION THE BALL. HOPE THIS HELPS

The best way to position the ball is to probably use a consistent preshot routine.

Draw an imaginary line just behind the ball that is perpendicular to the target line. Approach the ball from behind, placing your right foot on this imaginary line, lean over from the hips, placing the sweetspot of the clubhead behind the ball. Next place your left foot about 1" in front of the line, keep the left heel in place and flare the left foot open. Finally move the right foot back

If you have access to Ben Doyle's tape, his preshot routine is easy to follow.
