Brian's Video Equipment

Brian,

I think I heard you state that you used a mac for most of your work, as do I. I was wondering if you could outline what kind of camera you've got, which software you use for movies and stills, etc. I'd appreciate any info as I'm trying to build my own setup. Are there certain camcorders that are more readily compatible with the macbook laptops? I'm using Adobe Photoshop for most of my picture editing.

Any thoughts from others out there using macs would be appreciated. Thanks guys!

nothing too grand...

Give me a price range....

All told - hopefully under $800. I'm planning on having this include camera, tripod, software, etc... I see some camcorders for $350 but wonder if they'll have enough frames per second for golf swings.

I remember you calling yourself a "gear head" when it came to this kind of thing. It seems like the technology is as relatively inexpensive as it has ever been.

Appreciate the help!

Tech specs necessary for golf?

In order to capture a golf swing without blurring the shaft, what Frames Per Second should I be looking for? Are their any other specs to look out for as well?

Frames per second is always 30 (except for the new HD cameras).
The Panasonic under excellent lighting conditions allows you to set the aperture from 2500 to 5000. These settings prevent blurring of the club.

So what should I look for?

What is the threshold aperture setting in good sunlight necessary to prevent blurring?

Brian can confirm/deny but it's a blend of shutter speed and fps.

My canon digital camera has a 60fps movie mode (most of canon's do) which allows me to capture almost every frame in the swing that is valuabe and since i only teach on a part time basis, it works good enough for me since i don't use video much.

Plus the camera part works well too :)

I am not sure of the threshold. If you set to high and not enough light the picture will be dark. You just have to play with it. It is certainly good enough to view golf swings.

I believe the Canon is only 320x240 at 60 FPS. AN HD video camera is able to display at 60FPS - 720P or 1080I.

All about shutter speed and manual controls

You need to be able to manually control the shutter speed, some cameras don't allow you to do this manually and are around 1/2000 shutter speed.

I've got a Panasonic GS180 which has a heap of controls you can set manually, with a shutter speed up to 1/8000.

The video below was shot at 1/4000 as the light wasn't that bright that day... have a look

BM, how 'bout a good DV camera with mic input??

Brian,

I like to use a lapel mic for videos... my old Canon is shot, any input under $1000?

I have the GS250....

very similar to this unit. I highly recommend the 3CCD Panny camcorders. It's everything you'll ever need.

I have a camera that is for sale

Last summer I bought a very good Panasonic 3chip dvd camcorder. It has less than 4 hours of total use. Brand new in every way.

I am getting a dvd laptop for lessons DVD and the camera is now on the market. I have 4 other cameras.

If anyone is interested, let me know.

software?

Brian,

What about the software that you use for your teaching? What do you use to edit video?

Appreciate your help.

won't work

V1 home has a free version which is what I used in my latest threads and swing practis is also free. Google on brotha...

Yeah I would, but V1 or C-Swing don't have mac compatible versions. In fact, I don't think there are any golf swing analysis software programs for mac. We use V1 here at the club and it's just fine for what I'm looking for, too bad.
