Brians you tube video on downswing

on one of brians you tube video's he talks about how the down swing is like pushing a shopping cart, its the force of the body that pushes the shopping cart. he talks about how at the top of the swing it is the uncoiling of the body that moves into the left arm which in turn causes the downswing.

My instructor has me working on my downswing, he tells me that once at the top of the swing i should not use any arms at all in the downswing, basically he wants my uncoiling of my body to do everything and my arms are only moving because they are attached to my trunk. he wants my trunk to start and uncoil right through the ball as the arms follow.
any thoughts on this???

That generally is good advice. I know I hit it better using the body to move the hands.

Knowing WHAT you want to do with the hands and then accomplishing it with the body.

Using your body to transport the hands.

All I ever think in my downswing is "left shoulder up." Or "drop and pivot." (i.e. "Drop then LSU.") That's how I "hit it."

Do know what your hands need to do though. Rotationally (i.e. clubface) and aiming point wise and with regards to tracing.

Take a look at Brian's video in the "hitting against a firm left side" thread:

He has a little drill where he throws a golf ball, very hard, down the target line. Obviously, his right arm is very active in adding speed to the throw. It sounds to me as if your teacher is trying to teach you the correct sequence of the downswing, but at the potential of losing the "hit" of the right arm. If you are a gifted athlete, or played a lot of baseball, you may do that naturally. If not, you may wind up sacrificing distance, IMO.
