Can over acceleration cause fat shots?

I've always struggled with hitting the ocassional fat shot during the course of a round, espcially with the long irons. I've tried most everything to include not flipping the club, swinging under the stick, spine tilt and maintaining a steady head, but I still manage a few fat shots during the round.

I have noticed in some of my videos that I lunge both downward and forward on the downswing and I think at times it may be associated with throwing the club too fast from the top. Have any of you out there struggled with this or seen students with similar problems that eliminated fat shots with a smoother start to the downswing.

Try getting your LEFT SHOULDER as far away from the ball as possible at impact.

Brian, would trying to get your RIGHT shoulder as far downplane as possible do the same thing?

Not brian but yes...however in my teaching the "left shoulder up" seems to work much better than right shoulder down about 90% of the time.
