Can someone explain this PLEASE

I have been working hard on many aspect of TGM (forum, articles, video) and have been enjoying many successes as a result. During my last two rounds I have felt so confident in my shot-making that I have felt absolutely comfortable over every shot.

During a recent practice session (trying to ingrain current swing changes) I started by dropping my first 50 or so pitch shots within 5-10 feet from 60 yds out. Then, the bottom dropped out.

I hit the next 100 or so balls you-know-whatting almost every one of them. Off the hosel, off the toe, short deep divots, loss of flat left wrist. No matter what I tried, I could not fix it. I ended up emptying the shag bag and leaving 75 balls on the range.

Question is, how could I have gone from such a comfortable, confident swing to this crap almost instantly? Has this happened to anyone? Any suggestions what to do?

Yes its happened, heres what i do when this seems to start,i swing the club with no ball, little swing feeling rhythm, no tension in my body, i call it dancing with the club, very relaxed, no stress, rhythm.

when I start doing sh** like that it is because of my weight distribution between heels and toes. My head would move ballward on the backswing sometimes. So perhaps that is something to at least check.

Bullish:

As Homer said, go back to Basic and Acquired motions of 12-1 & 12-2. I know it seems foolish and each of us want to use our full stroke in 12-3....BUT, I honestly will go back and start by hitting little chips and then little pitch shots. From there, move up very slowly...I play to a 2-3 HDCP and still go back to the short short when struggling.

lol the old "unspeakables" eh.

It happens...I know how you feel man...sometimes it's like you can't avoid them. Brian could prolly help you out pretty well when he gets on- give you a better idea on the cause of those shanks anyway. There are a few causes to shanking...

BTW I think FL-John's advice is pretty solid: since you're still learning, go back to "baby steps" for a bit. You obviously WERE hitting it well- it will come back if you give it some time and more practice.

Don't know if this is the source of your problem, but if I start over rotating or fanning the club open going back, everything you describe happens to me. Check your takeaway.

Yes me too until....I read Yoda's post on starting every practice session and pre-round with the basic and aquired motions. I remember the post had a little story associated with Larry Nelson doing the same thing.

I'll offer help in non TGM terms. For whatever reason, sometimes I will go through a phase where I shank my chips and pitches. I think my head is moving around in the backswing or something. What I do is spend a couple of practice sessions conciously trying to hit the ball off the toe end of the face of the clubhead. Seems to work for me. I 'think' what that tells me is that when shanking it, I must be diving toward the ball with my head and upper body during the swing. By thinking of hitting it off the toe end, it forces me to keep that upper body and head in check.

IT happened to me a couple of years ago. I just bought my MP30s and was really excited to hit them. For 45 min. I was Sh***ing everything.
I was so close to actually crying. Then I took my 3wood made some nice swings with that (it's real hard to sha*k your spoon), and my swing came back.

....and....lag the sweetspot not the shaft ;)

I agree Jeffy...that's definately a common one. Open the club a bunch can work so long as you get it back to close. Otherwise- lagging the hosel...

You might want to check your three dimensional start up and see if the upward part is missing. If you are moving the club head back and in without upward motion will set yourself up for a hosel shot. Also check your Downward (attack angle)on the down swing. You might have to much out motion and not enough down. [8]

Good Luck

Bullish,

Over at Lynn's- download his past posts that he put in pdf. Use the find or search in your adobe reader and look for Larry Nelson and check out the rountine.

also: Try to put a hit stroke on the ball from impact fix. This will feed your head with the thoughts of solid impact again. I find it tough to hit a hosel rocket with a hit stroke.

Last: I think over at Chuck's place he still has the "Yoda's Sercet" thread with the picture I took showing the drill. It is basicly the right index finger down the shaft acting like pp#3. The drill is hitting balls with this grip, keeping the right wrist bent. You get Solid Impact and a great sense of what pp#3 does at impact. Lynn tells me he warms up with this drill all the time. Hit a thousand shots like this on a putting green and own a new swing. Caution impact gets loud.

We have a winner! Thanks for all the advice everyone. I hit balls today(borrowed from a friend), and worked on 'twistaway' from one of Brian's articles. Club face looked way shut, but it did the trick. I think another prob I was having was getting onto my toes on the way down, but that may have been caused by problem one. Anyway, no you-know-whats to be found, confidence returns. I'll have to get my clubs out of hock and head to the course.

Thanks again for all the good advise. I'm going to refer to this site as 'the bible' from now on.
