How I got a Flat left wrist at impact.

- I worked on it everyday.

- I got a small tire and was not satisfied until I could make it move and sound like Ben Doyle in the "tire trouble" video.

- When it got too loud for the neighbors at night I did the same thing with a leather sandal or a block of wood on the carpet inside. When I didn't flip the block of wood over or the sandal I did it right; same for the tire.

- I chipped balls into a net making sure my left wrist was flat and did not move on to a pitch shot until I could hit a chip with a flat left wrist.

- Confessions of a former flipper was watched at least weekly during this period, if not a couple times a week.

- I worked really hard on it and I can confidently say that I am not a flipper anymore.

When I first started I was just like you and thought I would never be able to do it, but I did it, it's something that just requires total commitment to changing.

jerry,

Not sure if you've read the "Your best method to a FLAT LEFT WRIST" thread, as this may have a gem or two in it that will help you also.

Here's is A way---or two.

Place a ball in a divot.

Hit it.

Repeat using the same divot.

Repeat until divot needs serious repair.

Also:

Try hitting little pitches witha VERY VERY VERY weak grip, and try to hook them as well.

When you can, strengthen your grip slightly and repeat until you have an orthodox grip.

Flipping Remedies

I also am fighting a tendency to flip - especially under pressure. Here's what I think has helped me considerably:

- Make sure your shoulders are not too far from the ball at setup. Being far promotes flipping because flipping can give you a longer reach (this is true for me I think because my flip occurs in combination with the left shoulder not being up and back enough). If you are coming down to hit the ball with a nice flat left wrist but your subconscious realizes that you will miss the ball, all sorts of bad compensations will occur - one of which might be flipping. Brian's confessions video mentions you need to bend over the ball like a real golfer. You can use impact fix to precisely get the correct head/shoulder distance from the ball.

- The other thing that I think seems to be helping me is "swinging" the left arm as opposed to "hitting" with the right. I'm still experimenting with this but my flip generally occurs by a move with the right hand - so I'm trying to take the right arm hit out of my swing. But I'm still trying this out.

The flipper video is key. What has really worked the best is moving the ball and aiming point forward. If the ball is too far back, it really tends to produce the flip. Yesterday I worked on forty yard pitches with horizontal, angled and vertical hinging. As long as the ball was off the left heel, great results. Make sure your ball position isn't too far back. Mine was, it leads to flipping and an underplane downswing.
