Chamblee on the Waggle

Brandel Chamblee made some interesting comments regarding Watson and his waggle versus the non-waggle approach of the younger guys. I think this is a keen insight..it was fun to contrast Watson's address routine with Westwood's. Both are obviously great ball strikers but I can't help but think that Westwood would benefit from Watson's more athletic approach.

Chamblee was saying that the older players like Watson waggled the club to get better feel for the shot at hand...a sort of rehearsal of the shot. He also said that it helps Watson assume the proper address position for the shot he was about to play. Contrast that to the precise but sometimes static address procedures of the younger guys...Westwood and Howell for example.

To my eye the younger guys just don't slip into a shot with the grace and aestheticism of the Watson, Nicklaus, and Snead era wagglers. The younger guys look too measured, to robotic, they look to be sacrificing athleticism for precision...I think we might do well to learn from our elders.

Brian has been saying forever that the waggle in his case is also a rehearsal of the shot he is about to play.

i think thats just something westwood does. he does all his waggling, then seems to freeze static for about 5 seconds over the ball

I say this constantly that one of the negative influences Tiger has had on the younger generation is his static approach to his pre shot.
