After watching NHA2.0 I changed my grip to neutral in an effort to try and stop the hook I recently developed. Hit about 60 balls at the range and went and played a round with my buddies. Didn't have the best game of my life but didn't hit ANY hooks. One thing I noticed was that I could feel the club in the backswing resting over and on my left thumb. Don't recall ever feeling the club sitting on my thumb like that. None the less, I was crushing the driver, the 4w, and the hybrids. I hit a couple of driver slices too but most were straight and long.

Iron play was okay but I'm happy with everything overall considering I changed my grip from strong to slightly weaker than neutral.

On a sidenote, I've been gaming an 11.5* driver because I had gotten to where I couldn't hit my normal 9* driver. I had started hitting low burners (something similar to what described in NHA with the 1iron) and just overall bad shots. After moving to the 11.5* I was able to use the driver again but the ball flight was very boring not high at all but I was able to use it. Today I was back to using the 9* and it had the nice launch angle and trajectory that it used too. All of this and the only thing I did was change my grip...

The Grip

Glad you got results d0n.

It is amazing to me how many teachers try to convince their students to strengthen their grip to improve.

I have done it maybe 10 times in 26 and half years of teaching.

It is VERY IMPORTANT to note, that I do not teach a "visually neutral" grip to everyone. A couple of years ago, I got to the point of hardly changing grips anymore, but when i do, I is almost always weaker.

Nothing wrong with a Non-neutral grip, check out the top of my backswing in the "more high speed fun" thread, and you can see it is stronger than that.

Again....think root cause.

Funny thing about my strong grip. My last instructor changed me to a strong grip. I had been working with a neutral to slightly strong grip when the instructor moved me to a strong grip. His words "you'll never be able to hit a draw without a strong grip." Even though I could have cared less about hitting a draw, I went along with it.

Ahh well, it's back to neutral and it seems to fit.

One of the first things I have learned from brian is how many people strengthen their grip in order to fix some problem; both student and teachers. As brian has said u need to think root cause and not bandaid by strengthening the grip. In many cases that root cause is poor clubface control and lots of times in tends to be too open.
