Club length/lie and D-plane

All things being equal-If a player goes from a standard length shaft and lie, to a club that is 1.5" longer and 2deg upright-wouldn't he hit down more
(steeper AOA) and less out, than with the shorter set of clubs (since it is more like a ferris weel) AND wouldn't this make it easier or more natural to hit Down and produce a "straighter" shot?

I ask this because I used a friends set for a few rounds while on vacation last week that was 1.5 inches over stnrd and 2-3deg upright with a mid-size grip-(same basic clubhead as mine w/minimal offset) I hit the ball VERY straight w/out hardly any curve with borrowed set-(my set is standard length and standard lie, with a standard grip size-and this is what numerous club fitters have always put me in) I also use a Cadet med glove, so the Mid-size grip on the borrowed clubs was bigger. The shaft was an s300 and felt heaver than my set too...

I felt like all my strike was directed much more down and leveraged (w/better lag)-and the ball came out dead straight, higher than my usual w/no loss of distance...Do I need to switch after all the experts put me in standard???

I play to a 4hdcp
What gives???

thnks

Typically, when a shaft is longer than needed, it will help promote an outside in path. You can find this on any range with someone using one of the many overly long drivers. From a fitting perspective, one of the things you can do to "help" the OTT move is to use shorter, better fit for length shafts. What you experienced was probably more of a placebo effect than anything. 1.5" over is in big boy territory. I'm 6'5" and weigh a few stones, and am playing +1" with mid-sized grips. +1.5" (in steel no less) is a lot of swingweight to be slinging towards the end of a hot day's round.:)

When you miss a shot with your clubs is it more often to the left or right?, are you right handed?

Thnks,
Yes, my friend is 6'5"...I am 6ft 205lbs and an ex-hockey player-just felt more like a swinging motion for me than my tendency to be more of a hitter...

When i miss shots with my irons it is usually a pull to pull hook- (then i will start leaving it out to the right after a few of those in a round)

Interesting, i wonder what the two different sets of clubs would look like for you on a Trackman session?

Sounds like you need to first experiment with different makes of shaft and different stiffness levels. Maybe find a Titleist demo day, or a place with the full iron fitting cart. That way you can really tell the difference.

I am 6'3" and played the last 3 years with +1/2 over Titleist standard, 2 degrees up. This year I am playing with standard length, standard lie Titleist clubs. I would say I'm hitting better this year. Actually thinking of going a little flatter.

See 3Jack's post's about this. He is something like 6'5", but purposely playing with 4-5 degree flat irons.

On the swingweight topic, even 1/2 over ups the swingweight of Titleist irons to around D5. 1 1/2 over and you are out of sight high. Ping might be able to pull it off.

Also the swingweight of your friends club may not be much different than yours, due to the upright lie and heavier grip and the shafts balance point could be different thus counter acting the extra length, the only way to know is check them on a scale. You can swingweight a telephone pole to D-0., not that you could swing it... lol. Also most people can't tell the difference when the swingweight only varies by a couple of swingweights.

I was fit 2.5yrs ago at Cool Clubs- standard everything and told to keep my 6.0 rifles-as they speced very good...

This year I went on the Mizuno Performance Fitting System-
I purchased the MP68's with KBS X-stiff...i really like the way the shafts feel; and hit them better/consistant than my rifles.
I just noticed that I hit my friends clubs straighter/easier-just felt like a simple, more verticle swing...I just swing down-ball comes out straight and high (if anything a little tendency to fade a yard or two)

My silly brain just want to know why...
the heavier swing weight seems to slow me down and feels deeper in my BS
thnks

It might be a difference in total weight, not swingweight, as his shafts and grips are probably heavier. Just a quess.
