Clubface: address, impact and separation

Brian, I have recently been watching your video and something stood out.

You say that at address the clubface should be closed at address, open at impact and square at separation.

I would like to know how this ties up with hinge action.

For example, seeing the horizontal action is close only, does this mean that the face must be “more open” at impact compared to angled hinge action or even vertical hinge action?

If this is the case, then how do we determine how open it should be?

I am also guessing that if we are slightly off and the face is “too open”, and is still open at separation but we use horizontal hinge action the ball would start right and draw back. This seems to indicate to me that when using horizontal hinging it is better to veer on the side of being too open at impact and separation, compared to being too closed.

Ukhacker, if you notice when Brian said at address his face was slightly closed, he meant at adjusted address, when he went to impact FIX, the face was square because his hands were ahead, but at adjusted address, his hands were midbody, therfor the face was slightly closed.

Yes I understand about the adjusted address position with mid body hands. Although I'm pretty sure he said open at impact and square at separation. I just want to know how open and how this varies with each hinge action.

Thanks for the link hue. I read that when it first came out and just re-read it. I don't think that article covers modifications necessary when it comes to various hinge actions.

Another thing that I don't understand from reading that article is that if we use horizontal hinging, and hit the ball with the face open at impact and square to the target line at separation, wouldn't the ball start straight at the target (due to the face location at separation), and draw to the left of the target due to the close only action of the horizontal hinge?

The only thing that makes sense to me to hit a draw with a horizontal hinge, would be to have the face open at impact, and open at separation (although less open then at impact due to the horizontal hinge). This would start the ball at the right of the target (ie where the face is pointing at separation) and curve back to the target due to the hinge.
