Clubface Control: Longer Clubs

Had a lesson with Brian last summer and one of the main things we worked on was the downswing twist to get the face closing. Currently, I can put a 9 iron in my hands and I'm "lights out" with it. Then I'll switch to a 6 iron and have mixed results. What's the key for clubface control with longer irons and woods? Thanks,

Curtis

This may be a personal idiosyncracy but I find the shorter heavier clubs easier to torque. By torque i am referring to the tumble action needed to lag the sweetspot. Longer levers are more unruly. Having said that the more I practice "carry and tumble" the better I get at torquing through the bag.

I was wondering about the weight as well. For some reason I feel I can monitor the sweetspot better with say a 9 iron. It just feels better in my hands. I wonder if getting all of your clubs MOI matched would help???

What ideas/drills did Brian give you to help feel the downswing twist? I'm working on the same thing but don't have many results to share due to the weather.

Thanks

If your worried about weight why dont you add lead tape? Most irons off the rack are d2 swingweight. Thats the problem with some modern day equipment they make em longer and lighter!

Do you have Never Slice Again? It's the downswing twist. If my memory serves me correct, it's the same thing in his Golf Magazine article/video.

PS This is for jdswets question

The clubs are actually pretty heavy clubs already, I guess it's just the "feel" of the shorter iron. MOI? Anyone have this done? Is it possible to close the clubface better on a long iron if it "feels" like a shorter iron?

Staying in your turn and keeping the left arm from over accelerating in the downswing

This makes sense. Staying in the turn means to me "the carry". I could be wrong but moving the club/arm combo closer to the point of torque application means less torque required because the club is more vertical. Also the club is accelerating laterally which may require less torque force. Intuitively it seems that it is easier to torque a shaft when it is more perpendicular. Torquing early in the downswing requires more force and this increases with the length of the shaft.

My guess. Maybe an expert in dynamics can confirm or deny (Mandrin?).

Kevin, thanks for the reply. Is this what you call "left arm tug"? I think Brian mentioned your name and something about this in our lesson last summer.

Best way to not accelerate the left arm? Thanks!
