Can you properly compress the ball without taking a deep divot?

How do you know if you are properly compressing the ball?

Sometimes i really think i do but the divot is rather shallow, any comments?

In the scheme of things, a deeper divot is better than no divot, but IMO the best divots are long, thin, and the size and shape of a dollar bill.

the first sign of proper compression is the 'sizzle', even on shorter shots/wedges, the second is 'feel' - like the ball sticks to the face, and the final sign is the sound - a cross between a loud 'crack', and pure 'turf'. I think it was either Yoda or Ben who said it 'sounds like hitting a stone' - but it certainly shouldn't 'feel' like hitting a stone.
