Confessions of an inveterate flipper.

Gosh

My swing sucks. my left hip is unservicable, Racing motocross and enduro's and playing rugby will do that to you. I have a loose pieces of cartilage floating in it. I've also injured my left hand, my left pinkie and that side of the hand really hurt. Double overlap'll do that to you, ask Mr Furyk.

I think I have always had some degree of throwaway. I actually could play some good golf like this. My PB on a real golf course under real playing conditions is 67.

I own a copy of the yellow book and have read it many times. I have a good mental understanding of the imperatives, essentials. Thanks to Brian, for this.

Anyway I am injured and thus unable to hit anymore, I HAVE to swing.
I was hitting it thin ALL THE TIME. This is a SURE sign of flipping, ask Brian he'll tell you. Good information Brian, Thanks.

Anyway I remembered reading in "5 Lessons" about how the right index finger and thumb were "Swing Wreckers" thanks Mr Ben. So I made a ring around the grip by pressing my right forefinger against the tip of my right thumb (I am right handed). Keeping both off the grip. I think PP#3 has just moved down to my first joint.

I have played like that since, you'd think I would lose distance with the injuries and general decrepitude, well, I am here to tell you that I have not lost an inch and have probably gained a few yards.

My swing feels like boiled crap, but impact is so solid it is frightening. I know I have no throwaway because it feels like my clubhead never gets past my left foot. The fact that I nearly fall over from recoil tells me that I am getting some serious work done.

So try that, It might work for you, who knows. At least I can still play and that is the only thing isn't it?

Thanks be to the Ben and the Brian

Whoa...never heard that one before- ring around grip.

If it works it works eh. At least you don't have to change your swing.

I use the right forefinger "unHOOKED" and right thumb OFF THE CLUB drill all the time....

It is in my top three drills....!

What purpose does this drill serve? Is it to help maintain lag? I'm curious because I've actually seen people play with their grip like this.

It demonstrates the feel of 'loading' and maintaining lag pressure, giving the feel for PP#3, and thus giving you the ability to send PP#3 through the inside back corner of the ball. No throw away, and a 'heavy' club.

Is there any reason why somebody shouldn't play with their right index finger "hanging" (a la John Daly), as opposed to having it curled around the grip like most people? Or is it something that should only be used as a drill?

There is some benifit to hooking it, but if it ISN'T hooked, the golfer is 'scared' to throw it away...

....ahhhhhh!

Not sure I follow you on that one (a bit over my head[:I])

Bigwill - in other words, this 'instantly' shows you that you have thrown the club away, because if you can't 'feel' the loaded club on your finger, you won't 'feel' any control at all (and probably won't hit it well, if at all).

It also really helps with over acceleration at the transition ;)

Try it and focus on two things

1) hit DOWN on the ball
2) hit punch shots with the clubhead finishing BELOW your hands, don't let the clubhead get above your hands! Keep those hands LEADING as you hit down

You'll find that you will feel a very 'heavy' swinging club, and you can really 'mash' the ball.

Low speed, high thrust, and lots of 'zip' on the ball. You'll know it when you 'hear' it.

Sizzle
