Crushing my pushes

Ok, I've been using the SD pattern for the past few weeks with good success. Getting mostly draws or hooks. Luckily the hooks are half way playable. Once in a while I push the ball, maybe once or twice a round. But when I do I CRUSH it! Better than any of my other drives. They are a lot higher and a lot longer. Why is that? Can anyone help? Thanks!!

2 Ideas

1. Agreeing with puttmad...
Perhaps you are trying to 'draw' the ball with a bit of a flip on most swings. When you take the flip out you make better contact and 'compress' the ball better (I know that doesn't *really* happen, but it's still an important feel and concept, I think), hitting a good shot.

2. You say the long ones are higher, and you seem to be referring only to the driver. When you aren't closing down the face you are hitting the ball with more effective loft. Perhaps more loft is giving you more carry, indicating that your current driver isn't giving you a high enough launch angle.

Yeah, I'm not sure. You are correct, it's just the driver. I have a feeling I'm delofting the club but not sure how. Too inside-out, underplane?? All I know is that my draws/hooks don't even come close to the loft. I need to figure something out because my course is fairly hilly and I need more loft when teeing off into a rising fairway.

curtis,
Are they pull-hooks or proper hooks that start well right of target?....

They are going higher and longer because you are essentially have a much better face/path relationship that relates to spin/launch which allows the ball to go farther when you hit "your push."

Remember that usually, when you are hitting draws/hooks you have delofted the club somehow and that is going to reduce spin and reduce launch, so unless there is enough ball speed to keep it in the air long enough, the ball will go shorter than it's potential.

So any suggestions Jim? Thanks

PS Do I not have enough clubhead speed for a draw? On a side note, last year at the end of the season I was hitting high fades that were going just as long if not longer than my draws currently. Thanks again!

you can draw it at any swing speed, i'm simply suggesting that maybe when you hit "your push" your launch conditions are better for the ball to go further.

if your high fades were going longer than my hunch would be that your draws don't have enough launch or spin and thus reducing your distance. Fades should always go shorter, all else being equal, due to more spin/launch/spin.

Of course this is all assuming that your swing speed doesn't change between your high fades and your pushes
