Curing Pulls......

Trying to eliminate pulls. What factors cause pulls?
This is what I know...

1. Lack of axis tilt
2. bending the plane line
3. Clubface problem

what else???

How about....

Shafts that are too soft

5. Ball too far forward?

After overcooking the axis tilt thing...maybe I'm not doing the tilt consistently. However, my straight shots are really good. The pull is the major miss.

So, I'm trying the work with the little things first before going back to axis tilt

I swing a 5 iron about 85ish. Butt freq on my 5iron shaft is 312. I think I can eliminate the shaft stiffness.

Shafts that are too soft

Jim,
How do you know when you need stiffer shafts, or is it purely on swing speed?....

Reason I ask is I hit pretty straight with my normal pace swing, but if I am between clubs and am trying to add a bit instead of taking extra club and shortening grip a bit, I can get a pull...

Right hip rotators that are too tight - messes up your axis tilt- if you know what to do with the swing but keep occasionally pulling-check your hip motion

Right posterior shoulder/lat tightness that doesn't want to let go.

First two areas I check

What stretching exercises best loosen these areas?

OK ....range tonight...

Hit a lot of balls tonight. Was hitting 50/50 pulls and straights.

When I focused on trying more axis tilt, I started blocking shots.

I've been using the Manzella Neutral and get the grip by checking the wrists and scoring lines like in the video.

I seem to get a feeling of the 3 fingers on the left hand really closing the clubface through the ball. This is not something intentional, just felt it.

So, one thing I worked on was to sole the club first (vs. grip, check the scoring lines to left wrist then sole) and slightly open the face (a couple of degrees)....the grip.

While this set up helped, I'd get the occasional, unexpected, hard pull

One night at the range didn't really solve anything but....
Is it possible my set up/grip is directly responsible for the pulls vs. ott? I really focused hard on just dropping the hands and pivoting to hit the ball.

whether pulls or straight, I am getting long, powerful hits that really look good. 7iron is flying 160ish with a nice high trajectory

Shaft flex

Jim,

With all due respect I recall that Tom Bartlett posted that pulls can be caused by shafts that are too stiff. That has been my observation as well. Soft shafts tend to miss right, stiff tend toward pulls--not hooks but pulls

I agree with Tom on a lot of things but not this, I have found when a shaft is too soft it unloads too quickly and closes the face much more rapidly.

I have seen it on launch monitors and in lessons. If you can explain to me why i'm wrong i'll gladly eat crow, but until then i'm sticking to my guns :)

Jim,

Could be that nobody is wrong. It probably depends upon the individual player. I know if the shaft is too soft for me in unloads too late, and I hit a low fade.

If you are unsure of your shaft flex with your swing speed, go see a clubfitter and get your swing speed rated. Then he/she can check the flex of your club or clubs and get properly fitted. I did this last year and it was night and day for me. The last driver I was using was too soft for my swing speed and the club was too long. With a shaft that is too soft, the club overloads and cannot catch up with your swing.
