First round of the year and old nemesis is still there - a block cut. Starts right and cuts. Why does this happen in D-plane terms?

Assuming centre contact - your clubface is open. your path may be a little left - depending on how severe the cut is. But the face is definitely open to both its path and the target.
This^^.
In general to describe ball flight using the D-plane, the ball starts close to where the face is pointing and curves away from the path.
So, with your ball flight, the face is impacting the ball pointing about 20 yrds. right and your path is going left which makes the ball curve right. Higher ball flight from open face, too.
