I always thought pin to closest edge of green is minimum 5 yards (equivalent to 5 steps).............any official answers anyone??

To my knowledge, there is no minimum. It's not uncommon in certain tournaments to have a pin two paces from the edge.

There is no minimum as far as I know, I always thought 3 paces was the unofficial rule.

here is my answer as a superintendent of 10+ YEARS.

no rule, it can be Anywhere.

General rule most Guys (supers) use length of flagstick.
When hosting mini-tour events I have seen many flags "two from the edge"
